High mileage does it matter ?

High mileage does it really matter ?? I have seen advertised a 2009 E89 3lt version and very tempted to have a look at it, the car has a very high spec (ex leasing car) but unfortunately it has done 42,000 miles, the car is just over a year old. I would love to change my z4 for this shape but I do have a limited budget at the moment, the car is advertised for just under £25,000. I guess this would have been all motorway traveling and may well have plenty of stone chips etc. Would this be a good move or not ?, I do about 8,000 miles a year so the car would be used most days and not just used at weekends. Any thoughts ? Cheers :?

You mean mileage?

42k ain't high, thats only 24k a year(ish). Edit - Lol! you're spelling - my maths!!
Remember there'll soon be more E89's 'maturing' as they hit the MOT thing.
Personally I prefer the old rag-top look :poke:

Likely they're all motorway miles plus as long as the servicing was carried out correctly when necessary I wouldn't be put off. The general condition speaks more than the mileage I would say.

Compare the car with other AUC. If it is signifcantly cheaper and the general condition (bodywork and interior) is like a 2-year-old car. Then I don't think the high mileage is not really a problem.

One thought: high mileage won't matter now, as long as the car has been serviced correctly and those miles are 'gentle' motorway cruising. But the high mileage will kill the resale value as the car ages, so will affect what you can get for it when you later sell it. So you need to make sure the purchase price now is suitably low so you don't lose out in the long term.

If it's cheap to reflect it and doesn't feel too baggy inside and out, it might be a good buy....with your low mileage in a few years it will average out. Check the brakes don't need doing (probably done if its an AUC anyway), excessive stone chips to nose, leather wear, that sort of thing. How it feels is important IMO

So if you kept it for three years thats 24k + 42k = 66k miles on a car thats around 4.5 years old.....thats not that awful in the scheme of things, but be sure the price is right. Check as many price guides as you can and try to screw the price down further if you can....they need anybodys business at the moment!

Good luck

I'm not sure on this one, but In general I don't think 1-3 yr old high mileage cars are discounted enough, once they come out of warranty and head towards 5 years values can fall sharply compared to a lower mileage example.

I'd agree, residuals haven't met expectations on a lot of vehicles including the Zed and the depreciation curve is steep as hell in the first 1-2 years, so I'd negotiate hard.

Hi Guys, thanks for your thoughts I might just hold tight and look for a lower mileage one after this summer and hopefully get a better deal on a 2009 model then.

and given the ads run recently trying to punt the new model on preferential terms, I suspect a facelift can't be that far off.....it was only three years on the last model after all...if so, that should push s/h prices down a wee bit. But you're right, pre-Xmas is a good time to try for a bargain. Assuming you can wait.....
