I’m sure this forum has heard it all, I bet this has happened to someone else.
Anyways my 2.5 08 e85 has been overheating of late. It doesnt always overheat up. tbh I’d hardly driven it since purchase. Maybe 200 miles total. Including the drive home in about 3 months.
Changed water pump...still issues...codes for stat start showing....change that...still overheating...full cooling system checked over and nothing of note.
Engine internal temp was at 121 and radiator wasn’t hot enough.
Luckily I went to BMW specialist and They notice the tank has been changed very recently. They focused on that area. I didn’t know there’s a thermostat under the rad as well. Turns out some utter utter tool of a mechanic had fitted the radiator thermostat the wrong way. SO My car had A stat fitted the wrong way the whole time. I’d even called out the AA once to check it over. They found no issues. Just my luck, nor did the car act up the day of purchase.
Last owner must have change the expansion pack then his engine wouldn’t stop heating up. Sold it to me for cheap. It was a very cheap fix after all.
So I changed a perfectly working water pump...the stat had faulty sensors so it had to go anyways...
Moral of the story, don’t take your car to an incompetent mechanic in the first place. I’m sure the previous owner must have taken it back and had it looked at and eventually given up trying to find the fault or maybe he did the work himself.
Car is finally ok again....NOPE! That’s a lie, engine light came on this morning..
why! Just Why! One thing after another with this car. I’m off to buy one of them code things, I’ll be needing it at this rate.
