Here goes - Ditching RFTs for Falken 452s

Will BMW tyre insurance only cover the standard runflats? Starting to regret getting that insurance now. firstly I probably won't keep the car the full 3 years, and secondly I can already appreciate the comments about tramlining etc so would be tempted by non-RFT as soon as they needed changing.

what are you using for puncture protection?

BMW tyre insurance can be used to replace Non Runflat tyres, I used it about 2-3 months ago

Just to let people know, when I had tyres replaced on 19" wheels, Micheldever Tyres managed to take metal shavings out of one of my alloys (Not on Z4)!!!!

I dragged one of the bosses out and in all fairness he did completely take responsibility by admitting they were responsible, giving the two rear tyres (goodyear f1 eagle in 285/35/19) for free and voucher for two future tyres at cost price. I would have preferred to pay the money and have my 19" axis alloys not damaged!

Just becareful with any tyre place.

Cheers,
supRo

Interesting. Maybe I will look at the alignment first. Whe I say tra
lining it as if the steering wheel hack sawed periodically as if it begins to pull momntarily. Know of any good alignment companies in the area Ginkster?

sorry but doing this on my phone and copying links over is a PITA. In the problems section is a thread by Zed Five titled Wheel Alignment @ BMW which has a few links. I used a local tyre co that had a hunter machine but the guys had little idea what they were doing. I had to tell them to put ballast in etc! Wheels in Motion gets good reviews. The link with 5% discount is how I found somewhere. I noticed Micheldever had full 4 wheel kit (not sure what make) and there was a thank you letter on the wall from a 944 owner who had had a good experience with the operator sorting out non-standard geometry settings (they are unlikely to show complain letters tho!!). Not sure what they charge. About £80-100 seems the going rate for full 4 wheel alignment. Perhaps others have experience of their alignment service. Good luck.

cheers ginkster. Have a good weekend.

Rode back on my motorbike from Croydon today and got pissed through in the raim :( Hoping for better weather soon for the bike and teh Zed.

If it can helps, I paid £25 for a full 4 wheel alignment at kwik fit in Bromley

I've been using Falken 452s for a while and rate them for the price, however they have little rim protection. I have them on BBS LMs in the correct sizes and the wheel lip is quite exposed, it may be just the LMs of course as I haven't seen them on any other wheel. It does make me much more careful near curbs, so not a totally bad thing maybe
On the subject of Micheldever, I used them for years then I had a couple of really bad experiences :x I won't relate them on here, other than to say both my partner and I were entirely shocked at the way we were treated, so were some of the staff if the truth be known.

That would make a lot more sense as a 17" is nearer £70 a corner, so add delivery and that gets in the ballpark of ginsters figure.

As an aside I can now get Falkens trade so if anyone is near me and serious about buying let me know. It's a lot less than the internet suppliers :), but I won't embarass my contact just calling and shopping prices.

So ginster assuming you didn't slide off the first corner on the mould release agent how are they???

if you can get falkens cheaper than places like camskill you could have a lot of interest here. I understand you don't wanna hassle for loads of prices but could you find out prices for the standard 17 and 18" wheel set ups, as that will be what the majority will have?

Neil - I'll ask him next time I drop by. I have a load of Jeep wheels that need the beads breaking off to clean out, so will see him then.

Of course prices change all the time.

Yeah the rim protection is very much lacking... I've played it a bit too fine a couple of times with the wheel coming off 2nd best against the curb. In any case with the roads in the state they are all four of my wheels need a bit of a refurb to get rid of all the stone chips and minor curbing.

Hi Guys,

I also swapped out my 18' RFTs for Falkens last week. Cost was 431 quid fitted at my office by Event Tyres.

Ride is certainly a bit better, but perhaps not quite as good as I was expecting.

I think the guy may have over-inflated them a little. What is the general concensus regarding optimum pressures front and back?

Many thanks!

What is it that's so good about the Falkens? I currently have Bridgestone RE040's on my Golf and they're the best tyre I've had. Previously had Pilot Sports and Goodyear Eagle GSD3's. I've not seen any mention of the RE040's on here yet and they're supposed to be a good tyre.

When buying a car how will you know if you have runflats on - is there a code on the tyre wall?

just ordered:
2 of FALKEN FK 452 - 255/35R18 94Y XL TL Total Price £212.20
2 of FALKEN FK 452 - 225/40R18 92Y XL TL Total Price £134.60
Ordered from camskill for a grand total of £356.76 (inc VAT and P&P), that really seems too cheep to believe considering the price of a pair of rear 255s everywhere else is around that figure.

I figure I'll pay a tenner a corner to get them fitted and balanced so a set of balanced and fitted tyres for under £400

hi, new member here!

Just got myself a 3.0i se a few weeks ago. I'm also going to change to Falkens asap. Do you think it will take away that annoying creak I get from the dash, just above the instrument panel ?

have to say I totally love my car (except for the dash creak and the run-shite tyres :)

I went from pretty uninspiring 16" wheels and bloody awful Bridgestone runflats to 18" 107's and Toyo Proxes T1-R's, I was away working so my wife went and got them fitted and told me she noticed a significant improvement. I returned home a couple of days ago and on driving the car was delighted with the handling and comfort. I was a little concerned about putting 18" wheels on as the ride on 16" and Bridgestones was harsh but the improvement even with lower profile tyres is very good.

I have seen a few posts saying that other manufactures runflats are a lot better than the Bridgestones, and thats all very well but how much do they cost, too much for me to experiment with anyway.

Anybody looking at this who is pondering on changeing to conventional tyres my recomendation is do it, I'm chuffed.
