My Dad is currently driving a 1 Series Coupe, Diesel, M Sport. It's a lovely car... white, limited edition with blue stitching in the leather and style 313 rims. He is however in love with my e86 due to the performance of the 3.0 and the fuel economy. He wouldn't fancy going back as far as an e86 as his is a 12 plate so he's fancying an e89 but isn't sure of the engine options that are available and which is the best to go for. I've told him not to worry as I will find out from you guys. Can you help me please as to which engine is the best to go for and can you clarify if some are turbocharged?

Thanks,
Adam.

Earlier cars were all straight 6, but they switched to 2.0 4-pot turbo motors in various states of tune around '11/12 or so. I've not tried one of those. Torquier but I imagine they don't sound as nice... certainly the new 528 I borrowed earlier in the year sounded uninspiring, whereas my 23i sounds loads nicer.
The top end Z4's are still 6-pot though as mentioned by Stark.

my 5th zd is the 28 (2.0 turbo) does a good 35 to 45mpg compared to 3.0 if i drove it like a nun. the 28 is faster, always keen responsive all the way to red line. your not carrying around a massive lump of an engine. it does a good job with the sound, and it is not as smooth. But I WOULD NOT GO BACK. I am saving 30% petrol and having fun in it.

To be honest soundor smooth is not as important to me than performance, anyone can drop the exhaust to make it sound noisy, but wont give me fun.

In fact its one I do not put into sport its fast enough 2nd from standstill then 3rd to 90. 1,800 revs and is a steady torque all the way.

Best of both worlds, fast and when not needing the fun MPG 30% up.
