Help!!!!!!

ok guys so i know its a little late but im hoping someone can help. this is my problem with the car.

I was driving home tonight and when i got on the slip road i obviously accelerated, i saw that the revs got to about 5k and then there was a bleep, the EML and Engine light came on and my revs dropped to 1.5-2k with little or no throttle response.

i killed the engine and then started again, now the EML stays on when the ignition is turned to 'on' but when i turn the car over it goeas and only the engine symbol stays on?????????
 
Just went and started the car again, the EML light and engine symbol stays on for a sec or 2 then goes off when i start the car, is this normal.



seeing as the symbols are gone shal i foret it or still get it looked at? anyone in newcastle with a fault code reader?
 
if all the lights are gone it should be ok, does it run ok now ?

might have been dodgy fuel.
 
i was earlier on, the fuel light had just come on and i went straight to fill up. you thing a bit of crap has been sucked into the engine?
 
Same thing happened again today although the lights didnt stay on when i restarted. any suggestions?
 
Have you filled up now?

I'd persist a bit - if there's no lights it's likely nothing serious, but I'd get the codes read asap, it should have logged the cause or at least the actual symptoms.

Again - if it seems to be running 100% and there's no lights, I wouldn't worry hugely, might just be crap in the fuel.
 
I filled up last night just before it happened. today i took it to 5k revs to see if it would happen again, and around about that mark it did. the EML comes on along with the engine light, there is a restriction in power where i cant go over 2k revs.

when i turn the car off and turn it back on it seems to be fine, until i suppose i hit 5k revs again. im just not sure it is a bit of a one off if it keeps happening around the same mark.


anyone know a good place to get the codes read that wont cost me a fortune for next to nothing?
 
If you're in Newcastle, I'd recommend the dude I used in North Shields, who was the only bloke in the country to be able to retrofit cruise to my /M.

Hey richard that reminds me of my mini (BMW one)

It had a cracked exhaurst/manifold and EML kept coming on for no reason from time to time, cutting the power to half. When I switch off the whole thing and restart again, it works fine. The cowboy I took it to said it needs new cable for accelator etc but I never bothered. Sold it to a friend who's brother knows a bit about cars, got the exhaurst bit fixed and hey presto the problem disappeared. Apparantly the comupter was detecting problem with CO2 emission and assumed it was having engine problem - hence cutting the power to half to put it in safe mode.
 
I wonder if you don't *actually* have a full tank of fuel - but the car shows a full tank and as its not full this is why 5k is the cut out.

1-2k is the limp home mode of the engine and ecu IIRC.
 
thats what it cuts out as. i just stuck £45 in the tank the other day so i know its full. im going to have a snoop about the car tonight to see if there is any signs of damage, loose sensors etc. the engine symbol that comes on talk about emmisions in the manual

im just after someone confirming something now, when you turn the ignition to the first click when the lights come on does your EML and engine symbol stay on? then when you start the car does it stay on for a couple of seconds then go?

im guessing that this is the way of telling me that a fault is logged, if so, can i reset that or is a trip to the garage?

Sounds normal to me.

Have a look on the FAQ, you can buy a OBD II cable for £25 and read the codes yourself if you wish !

Im 90% certain mine does this as has any other car ive owned, i will check for you soon though :) And i know for a fact my Engine ECU doesnt have any faults stored :)

yeah thats exactly what happens, its the kind of thing you dont really look at it until it beeps :P
