Help with tyres

Hi all,

I'm wanting to have the tyres changed on my car before I pick it up next week but not sure what ones I should be going for? The current set up is:

Front - 225/40R 18 88W Bridgestone potenza
Back - 255/35R 18 90W Bridgestone potenza

Obviously I'm changing them because they're currently runflats and pretty much every thread that I have read recommends that they be removed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Get 4 Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2's on. 'A' rated in the wet, lowest noise rating you can get at '67' and a good rating for fuel consumption. What's not to like, even the price is competitive.

I'll have a look thanks Danglesberries.

Silly question but do I order the same size for all or should I be getting 2 x 40 & 2 x 35 as currently fitted? I really can't get my head around tyres 🤪

Just looking on blackcircles and I can get the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 cheaper with the current discounts, are there better/worse tyres or pretty much like for like?

Thanks again

I used Asda online tyres and recently bought two Pirelli Powergy's using a money off code and paid £160 fitted which I thought was a fantastic deal. They currently have vouchers on Hankook and Avon tyres. worth a look. I think as long as you go for a premium tyre you cant go far wrong.

Are you 100% sure they’re not 255’s on the rear as that would make sense for a staggered set up and the different profiles?

Hi Alter. As Argyll Andy says check your size on the rears as on a staggered wheel set they are usually 255/35R18

Apologies yes they are 255 on the rear. I can only look at zoomed in photo.

Hi Alter, no need for apologies, just would be an expensive mistake ordering the wrong sizes

The sizes you’re quoting are correct for a staggered set up.

Just been reading up on staggered vs square and think I'm going to change to square setup. I'll be using the car as a daily drive on mostly city roads and the odd motorway so seems to be the more sensible option.
My next question is: do I buy tyres to match the current rear set up (4 x 255/35R 18 90W or the front 225/40R 18 88W?
Cheers

Hi Alter, before you make that decsion I think you'd be better reading a bit more, these cars aren't designed to run the same size front and rear, you'd be stuggling to get the same size tyres fitting your wheels anyway

I have a square set up on my Zed never had an issue with them. I run 18" MV2 wheels. I've had the square set up for about 6 months now and checked the tyres every week for the first few months for wear and rubbing etc. All still looks good.
I know these care were staggered from factory but I personally can't see the issue with running a square set up. As long as you get clearance and it doesn't rub on your wheel arch lining then I personally don't see how it could negatively impact the car.
I'm of course open to be corrected on this if someone can prove it decreased handling or is actually 'bad' for the vehicle.

I think a square set-up would only be "bad" if you fitted oversized or undersized tyres which are not appropriate for the rim width.

There's a pretty good chance that even if the tyres were 'square' the wheels would be staggered, so you'd still not be in a position to swap front to rear, if that is your intention.
Can't really see any reason for going square unless all the wheels are the same size?
A staggered set up will surely make no difference to a daily driver on city streets. Just boils down to a little extra cost.

As far as I'm aware all 18" wheelsets for Z4 E85/86 were staggered, i.e 18 x 8 front and 18 x 8.5 rear. My car originally had Style 103 'Daisy' alloys which were a square 17 x 8 set with 225/45 R 17 tyres all round. If you're going with a square 18" set then you need 8" all round in my opinion

And on that note, that is what wifey's has. 245/40x18 all round on 18x8" MV2s front and back.
However, the rears are off an E60 (as explained to me on the forum a while back)
The different offset fills the rear arches beautifully, but I doubt I could fit the rears on the front, even though the tyres are the same size.
To reiterate my previous comment, I think I'd be looking for decent quality non-runflats in the same sizes that the OP already has.

Agreed, I would also

Thirded. 18" wheels are staggered, tyres should be too. Stick with standard 225 40 fronts, and 255 35 rears. My vote would be goodyear eagle f1 5s.

Thanks for all the advice received. I phoned my local tyre centre and was told straight away that it would void my insurance if I was to change from run flats to standard? I had finally decided to to with staggered too. going to wait until I actually pick it up now and then sort it out.
