help with LSD build

Guys who have fitted an LSD, I need some help and not in a clear mindset to finish trying to figure it out myself.

What parts to I need for an LSD swap?

I've read, new seals, new bearings.

It's not entirely clear on realoem which parts are which so if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Car has the Autobox 3.0si engine.

Just the oil seals. I reused the bearings when I built mine. Does depend on your mileage thou I guess.

My mate fitted the same unit in his z and reused the bearings also.

Make sure you don't have to much backlash once it's all reassembled. Ideally 0.04mm to 0.08mm

What unit did you go for out of interest.??

Han an Mfactory one in mine and it was fantastic. I've now bought an M and I have to say out of the two LSD's I much prefer the Mfactory unit. It's loads up so much smoother than the plate diff on the M.

New seals for sure.
You don't really need new bearings but ideally if you are going to do a rebuilt, would be good to get new bearings and new axle stubs.

Which LSD are you getting?

I had an Mfactory but took it off. I could not stand the thump it was making when shifting, even though I had measured the backlash and it was correct.

Thanks guys, it is the mfactory unit.

I can't find part numbers for the bearings on realoem.

In fact I look at it and have no idea which bits I need
I've highlighted what looks like seals (do I need new dust plates)

Notice how no reference to any bearings

BMW does not sell new bearings. You need to get them from MFactory. They are not cheap though.

Mfactory suggests new axle stubs (dust plates)

I am very curious to see if you have the thump when shifting after installing the mfactory.

As above just the seals are needed.

I tried and failed to find new bearings. BMW wont sell you the bearings. Well they wouldn't sell them to me. They just kept saying if the bearings are damaged i would need a new diff :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: Even after explaining what i was doing.

My bearings were in tip top condition in the end so i re used them.

You will love the LSD you wont believe the difference it makes to the car. So much more fun.

cheers Matt

Are what I have highlighted in red what I need?

I'm waiting on a contact at BMW re the bearings but hoping to understand from you guys what I need rather than rely on them too much

All i replaced was was the inner and outer dust caps. Parts 11 - 12 and mine dose not leak.

Are you doing the job your self?

bmw spec is 0.06mm-0.14mm ;)

But it's important to check that (with a micrometer clock and magnetic stand), as measuring the backlash is the first sign (and by far easiest sign to check) if something is off in the install of the diff (wrong install, diff out of spec etc etc etc).

When i checked my backlash ( I cant remember the numbers) But it was as close as could be the same.

The way the diff is designed. If it all goes back together as it came apart. And the tolerances on the new diff are correct. They should be or you would have a faulty part. They should be right.
