Hi, been renting automatics for 8 weeks now after breaking left arm. Could not get extension on Thursday so used another major firm, guy said only have this merc csl but I'll give you a good price so I took it. Friday night driving home about 1/2 mile to go got an alarm check tyres, got home and had a look, rear nearside looked low checked and 1.4 bar other side was 2.8 bar. Called firm and said must have slow puncture, he said I'm in at 08:00 tomorrow and I'll sort it outwith a tyre firm. No messages today so called at 11.00 and he said just finished the morning rush will sort it now, 1pm still nothing so called again, he said Ive been trying to call on your mobile, you have to take the car to the tyre firm or call the AA.
I thought faster to go myself so I thought blow up the tyre before going, topped it up to 2.5 bar and saw a bulge appear in the side wall also noticed there was a loose flap of rubber on the side wall close to this bulge, set off to the tyre firm slowly, tyre fitter said that's it for this tyre but it's strange size and no spare until Monday, he also said there was a nail in the main tread and that was the slow puncture. Called the firm and they sent out a BMW 5 series and the tyre firm fitted the compact spare so the merc so they could take it back.
Stopped to eat on the way home and the hire firm called and said the tyre firm said it was caused by a heavy impact and they would claim £270.00 from me for the tyre, I said I've never had any impacts and the slow puncture was the nail and it was lucky or I would never have known about the wall damage, he said he didn't know about the nail, I also said I took the extra insurance he said ok but that only drops it from £1000 to £500, this was not mentioned at the time, the other firm drops it down to £100.
From what the tyre fitter said to me earlier there had been a heavy impact at some time that damaged the wall, when I drove at low pressure the damage spread and showed up as a bulge when I put the air in, looks like I will be blamed for a heavy impact that I did not have but can't prove, they want an accident report for the nail ?.
Any Ideas for when I take the car back Monday

Don't be pushed around buy this idiot and talk to him face to face. With all these potholes around how can they possibly blame you for it? Go to the office and make a hell of a fuss and make sure you phone your credit card and tell them not to let any payments go out to this company.
My mate got charged 250 quid for having snow on his hire car. They are crooks and should be treated as such!

It's a tough one as the car company will probably say the damage / impact was caused while the car was in your possession.

How long have you had the car?

I'd just fight it to the end.
