Hey Guys,

Just got my deposit down on a Z4, So next week I'll have 2 Cars, a VXR and a Z4, I'm wanting my private plate on the VXR transferring to the Z4 and my VXR to have the old number plate back on it!

I've been on the DVLA site and it looks like I need copies of both Tax Disks, Both V5C's and a V317!

But the site doesnt go into detail in regards to how this works, basically, it says it's a Plate transfer, does this swap the plates over, or just put the VXR plate on the Z4 and the VXR is then registered back to the original plate?!

Your VXR will go back to the original plate. Treat it as two seperate transactions as far as I know? When i bought my Z4, I applied for the plate to go on retention. So the first step is to do this.

If i were you, i would put the private plate on retention and ask the garage if they will do the transfer for you when you get the certificate. I would imagine that the garage you are buying the Z from will do a couple of DVLA 'runs' a week. Drop the certificate off with them and make sure they have the MOT and V5 for your new car. They can then do it for you and you can pop back to the dealer and have them put the new plates on that day. The dealer that did mine made the plates up for me as well so I only needed to pop in for 2 mins for them to swap them for me.

Get the plate on retention ASAP. All details are http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/BuyingAndSellingAVehicle/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_4022575

Give your salesman a call and make sure he can do the other bit for you.

Add to what Alex says in that you will need to supply the original of the tax disc and any MOT certificate at the time of transfer. They issue new ones of both. Copies won't do.

You may even if you ask the dealer they will do the lot for you for no charge or worst case no mor ethan the DOT transfer fees. They have done for me in the past and the advantage is they usually know exactly what they are doing.
