Each segment that disappears over time is approx 250ml, when a warning light/buzzer prompts you to top up it would need a full litre

I would not put any more in unless it says, you will over fill.

It’s already showing full, the bar on the display isn’t solid but just the outline. You’ve now overfilled the engine by one litre & it’s not so easy to remove from the n52 :(

Looking at an online manual it appears that the display can also indicate if the engine has been overfilled. At the moment your photo seems to indicate full but not overfilled.

That’s surprising, he’s just added a litre to an already full engine? :?

So what exactly have you done and when was the picture taken? Have you put in another litre since the photo? If so, now you need to drain and fill.

The op says the gauge didn’t change after adding the oil?

I don't know if it's the same issue, but my the display on my Z4 doesn't react immediately when I top up.

Because there is no dipstick I make a point of checking the level every time I use it. It got down to the first marker, so 750ml below max, and I put in 500ml. Next time I used it after 5 miles or so I checked it again and the display showed it still 750ml below max! Did another 10 miles or so and checked it again - result, only 250ml below max.

FWIW I had exactly the same issue with my E91 325i and N52 engine.

I’m so thankful the M54 has a dipstick!

I’d be tempted to remove some oil OP. Once you’ve driven and the oil level indicator has adjusted for the additional litre it’s bound to be overfilled.
