Help needed. MC sold. Where next?

Right, so the ad I wrote back in October shortly after the birth of my first born has been effective. That's the purpose of such ads of course, however now the deed is actually in the midst of being done I'm feeling quite lost. The nearly-owner of ///Molly is a new forum member and a very nice chap indeed, so I know she's going to a good home. But I can't help feeling like I'm now in motoring purgatory.

Been looking at the usual gap fillers; fast model 3 and 5 series, Audi's that feature the letter S as number prefix and even the incredibly capable and gorgeous Jaguar XF. I've looked at 4 seater convertibles in the shape of the old 6 and I've even investigated 7 series and S Class sail barges.

Am massively confused though. None of them strike me with any real passion. They're all practical and will allow future family journeys to be more fun than they would have been if forced to use our town Golf, but I just know I'm going to feel underwhelmed. The MC is an incredibly hard act to follow, it's just I wasn't using her and it seemed a real waste to resign her to a life of garaged battery conditioning with a handful of short blast into the home counties once and a while. Add to that the severe change in lifestyle and the equation keeps coming up with the same dismal results.

I've also considered getting another roadster commanding not quite the severe investment an MC demands in servicing, tax and insurance. But that defeats the object of getting rid of my existing two seater and I know the gf would give me that look (she's already told me I'm being a fool).

Is there anything out there that would work for me? What would you do? Barge, classic etc? I must admit there's a tiny part of me whispering those sweet words every now and again "get another ///M", so perhaps another MC or MR is on the cards in the [near] future?

So, before she goes this weekend I'll be getting the obligatory photos of Mini-Inkey$ in the driving seat. Just to prove that daddy was once, just a tiny little bit cool.

Congrats... or maybe commiserations!

if i had to get a more practical car it would have to be either a 335D coupe or estate

Sympathies for your loss :(

I would say a 330 convertible, either petrol or diesel, but the boot is stupidly small, so I will opt for the S4 or RS4 convertible

Always a downer parting with a much loved motor but can't see the point in selling for your reasons whilst maybe looking towards another M-c or M-r :? why ? :?
which engined 6 did you try ?
If i was looking to upgrade from the Z & had £15k ish then only the 6 or another 911 would tempt . both can do all & more that any car would be expected , carry 4 when needed , great engines & noise , plenty of kit to entertain driver & above all for me , a buzz when the garage door is opened ,
As for the S audis ? been all over europe in friends S4 & i would not be happy with that as my "buzz" car , , just not special enough . Rs maybe might add a bit more sparkle but they really do burn the £££ in maintenance
Tricky situation but one i,m sure many would envy , best of luck & keep us tuned in to what you go testing , pics as well :)

Oh inkey$,

You sound rather melancholy! The thing is about these cars as second cars or weekend toys is that they are owned by people who are passionate about cars, and we own them because of their looks, their 7,900rpm NA loveliness, their noise, their power, the analogue experience (no DCT/DSG)and the lack of other electronic wizardry). I'm in a similar position in that mine only really gets used once or twice a week at most and it's a lot of money to have sat on the drive not doing anything. But, and for me it's a big but, I would be very sad not to have that weekend hoon potential in something that made me feel special every time I drive it.

So......if you replace the M it needs to be with something that offers similar thrills otherwise you will always hanker for another MC or MR.

Okay. I am now very sad for you

How about the cracking M3 offers that are about right now ? A few on here have gone that way of late...

FWIW - I think the g/f and OG are right. Sorry, I know that's not helpful

Thanks guys. I knew I could count on you for a mix of advice and what-are-you-thinking.

Sorry to see it go for you inkey$ :( wishing you all the best going forward in your search I hope you get hold of something that ticks the boxes for you, good luck

I can't believe I am even saying this, but a TTRS? Similar sort of car to the Z4MC but some rear seats so more practical and will therefore get used more. Decent noise, 4WD and stonking performance.

Off to wash my mouth out with carbolic soap. :exitright:

Sars - what have you done to me?

M3 saloons can be had for low 20's now. Not particularly fuel efficient though... Or a 5 door Focus ST? Practical, quick but again thirsty and not exactly "premium"...

Another car that sounds like it could be good is the new Merc C250 diesel. Sporty-ish, quality inside and fuel-efficient. At around 30k it's good value i think too and is available in saloon, estate or coupe in vanilla or Sport editions.

Good luck with whatever you choose and hope to still see you around!

Second hand, out of warranty M3s, RS4s etc are fine if you have deep pockets. The V8 engine is more expensive to maintain than the one in the ZMs and the RS4 and S4 can throw up some scary bills. Had a friend who kept an RS4 from new to just out of warranty. First service out of warranty cost him £2k as it needed new discs and pads. He got shot of it after that.

Even big coupe verts are no use for kids when you have a pram (can't get the roof down on most with the pram in the boot) and rear facing cars seats (an absolute bugger to put in the back of a 3 door of any description). My mother and father in law have an e93 and it's useless for our 6 month old... so bad that they went out and bought a cheap 4 door to use when ferrying the kids. Don't get me wrong. Once baby is big enough to climb into their own seat it's fine as long as you can train them to follow that simple order.

I'm saying this a hell of a lot lately but how about an M135i?
Probably be a finance job but hear me out. The deals to be had are very good and it's an absolute hoot to drive one minute then a civilised shopping trolley the next. I have the F20 125d now and I can't fault it. Easily as fast as my Z4 if not faster in the real world, 50mpg so far, handles better, is more comfortable, is loaded with more gadgets than the starship enterprise and the looks are even growing on me to the extent that i look back when walking away. Only downside is the tractor sound track that comes as standard.

I came back just to suggest the M135i! Looks horrid (to me at least) but you can't deny the bang/buck factor! Same with the Mercedes A45 AMG, i know it's not out yet but they say it'll be on par with the BMW price-wise and it's got 4WD (albeit mostly FWD) and 335hp or thereabouts.

I am absolutely with you regarding the M135i so much bang/buck factor, there is a brand new one at my local bmw dealership & I keep looking around it but I think it looks lousy from the front but I want to love it for what it offers as a package.

A45 AMG revealed on Autocar website today. It's going to be £36k basic, probably early £40's with options. Not sure about it - still looks a bit people carrier to me.

Audi S5 for me... pretty quick, fairly sensible if you go for the sportback and looks nice.

I have noticed friends with huge estate cars and children are less stressed than those with a compromise vehicle

I have often thought developer215's motor is pretty handy - go faster diesel E class

Inkey Im looking for a family compatible set of sexy wheels too (to replace family only volvo!) and have been drawn to look at the mercedes CLS (an engine for every pocket) but with AMG kit gives a good impression to the neighbours and would get an over the shoulder glance as i walk in the front door!
