Car is in for insp 1 today and I asked about the common misted fog lamps.
They said it's corrosion so not covered.
I need to read the small print but I know some people on hear who had the same common issue and got them replaced under warranty. So I'm interested in what your tactics were or if it was a letter to BMW jobbie?

Thanks
jamie

Let's look at the problem - a sealed light unit, protected from the elements and not designed to allow the ingress of water etc etc is allowing water in and they state this is corrosion! Corrosion is the deterioration of a material due to interaction with its environment - I don't think the fog light was designed to interact with the environment. I would go back and ask to speak to the service manager and ask if he thinks it's normal for a fog light to mist up and where in any BMW manual/service sheet or whatever it says that this is normal. Ask for rectification and if no reasonable response ask to use their phone to ring BMW customer service - as always take note of who your speak to at the dealers (name, date/time details of conversation) for future reference if necessary.

They just had one look at them, and said they never dry out so they replaced them both.
This was done under to three year manufactories warranty, you'll have trouble if its under extended warranty I believe.

So - dealer has come back to me and warranty company has denied my claim for fog lamp replacement under extended warranty "due to corrosion"

In looking at the extended warrany (BMW) it says clearly what is NOT covered:

Detail Of Cover.
Comprehensive Insured Warranty covers all mechanical and electrical components of your vehicle for defects - except the items listed below:
All exhaust components (except catalytic converter)
All service items which will require periodic replacement
Any item that has worn out rather than suffered from a defect
Auxiliary drive belts
Batteries
Brake and clutch facings
Bulbs and fuses
Channels and guides
Cleaning or adjustment of any component
Coolant and fuel hoses
Discs and drums
Glass
Handles, hinges and check straps
Trim, upholstery and cosmetic finishes
Wheels and tyres
Wiper blades and arms
Weather strips and seals

SO it doesnt say ANYTHING about corrosion!

Im going to also consider what you have said AlanJ and formalise my response....

I'll keep you posted

Oh, i also asked about a rattle behind the passenger seat - they said it was a faulty wind deflector insert in the roll hoop - but denied that also due to it being retro fitted - erm i dont think so. I need to get them to dig out the original reciept for the car to prove this...

So i'll keep you posted on that as well.

Jamie, as we know with headlights and fog lights a lot is down to the dealer. I had both my fogs replaced at just under 3 years so manufacturers warranty but without and issues from dealer. I know of other memebers who have struggled with this though within three years.

Now at 3 1/2 years BMW are replacing my rear 108's for the second time again without issue although tehnically they are not covered by warranty.

I would go the dealer and try again, otherwise try another dealer. IIRC you go up north quite often, try one up there.

Good info and yea i do - but i like to prove a point at times, especially when the facts are present :)
If i dont win, i'll try another dealer

I have other warranty things to get fixed as well:

1) faulty nav (will explain on a separate thread)
2) tensionor strap in the hood needs replacing (roof slamming shut
3) water near where the roof motors are (water exits blocked)
4) wind deflector rattle

:)

Jamie dont think you will have any joy with the water exists being blocked, think you will have do do those yourself, although I owuld love to be proved wrong on this one.

:) Well the technician said he would sort this when i bought it back, so fingers crossed.
I would expect them to do it anyhow - as in my eyes its a design flaw!

Im writing my letter to BMW now - who would you send it to i.e. email?

Don't use 'e' mail - recorded delivery, confirms posting and receipt.
