Hi guys,
I love the Z4 and have been inspecting 2004 - 2005 models to buy. (2.5L)
I have seen several beautiful 04/05 models with as little as 31068miles (50,000km) on the clock. However, they all seem to have problems
So far i have spend close to $1000 on independent mechanic inspections (weekends rate/$250 each time).
Each one thus far has had the infamous 'steering issue' (makes a noise when the wheel is turned), or oil gasket leaks and/or coolant leaks. The owners had full bmw dealership logbooks and seemed responsible drivers. I have a bit of a heavy foot, and can't imagine the problems I'd run into if these granny drivers are having them.
How is it that a European designed cars with such low miles can have so many problems? I'm starting to think that every z4 i will inspect will have this notorious steering issue (unless its been fixed previously).
Originally i was targeting z4's with low mileage, but now i'm thinking to revise my strategy and go for those with 80,000 > , as at least then most problems have been surfaces and fixed!
I've driven some of the shittest Japanese made cars, and even at 200,000 miles they don't have (and have not had) this funky steering problem. I'm a little confused, as I thought the idea of a BMW was quality and reliability.
I really had my heart set on a z4, but now I feel that even if I find one without the mentioned problems, It will be a temperamental car, with the mentioned problems always around the corner.
Have I just been unlucky?? I Hoped that the the 04/05 models would have less problems than the 03.
Did these year models undergo mechanical updates to rectify any known issues from the 2003?
So far i have only looked at the 2.5L models, Are the 3.0L models more reliable??
Any advice or guidance would be great!
