Hi guys,

Just left work and started driving home, to be greeted to a worrying big red oil can light on the dash and a warning on the idrive saying low oil pressure, shut off engine.

I've stopped where I needed to be, but am still 45 miles from home!

Car is a 2011 3.0 sDrive. Still has warranty and BMW assist so I think I will call them. My question is...and it's likely a stupid one...

Do I call them using the SOS button in the overhead panel??

Car was fine when I drove to work this morning.

Cheers!!

Use whatever is fastest - SOS, Idrive for BMW assist or just give them a call. Hope all works out OK.

Car is at the dealers waiting for them to diagnose the problem. I'm hoping sensor too!! Although the car is only 18 months old with less than 10k miles so I have no intention of paying for anything!!

I'm sure theyll look after you and better it happen (whatever it is) now whilst in warranty.

Well I spoke to the dealer this morning. Hopefully looking at it today. Have also got them to do the security update and look at a fault with the CD player whilst they've got the car. They confirmed to me that everything should be covered under the warranty which was reassuring to hear!

Haven't heard from then today. But am in New York now for a few days so not in a major rush now.

Update....

I spoke to the dealer yesterday. They have replaced the Oil Pressure Valve, so it seems it was more than just a sensor problem.

They've also done the security update and have a new CD player on order (on back order with Germany so should arrive tomorrow).

Hopefully will be picking the car up on Saturday morning, so I'll be quizzing them on any potential damage that could have been done to the engine and what effect that might have.

Great news, you definitely want to know if the engine experienced low oil pressure or just indicated.
I would imagine no damage would be done if you'd stopped quickly and kept the revs down, although if the turbo has been starved of oil that would not be good :o

Do they mean the oil pressure relief valve I wonder?

skillick's signature line says 3.0i, so no turbo. One less worry for him

Yep... no turbo for me, so one thing less to worry about thankfully.

I wondered if this was somehow linked to the electronic oil level readout as recently I noticed that had taken some time to register. Does anyone know how the electronic oil level system works...does it work on pressure?

I'll post an update again after I've collected the car and they've explained exactly what they've replaced etc.

I asked the workshop manager at my dealer that same question! He outlined the process as follows:-

The oil should be up to normal temperature as you know, then a heating coil in the system applies heat to a measured volume of oil (or a known amout of heat - I cant remember which but you get the idea ) and the time taken to raise the temperature of the oil in the system is calculated back to to arrive at the total volume.

It that simple (Yea!) Not as simple as a dipstck tho!

I stand corrected, thought the 3.0 had one and the 3.5 had two. :D

None - I wish it had tho!

My 3.0 has been in hibernation for the winter so it will feel fast when it comes out to play!

Well... picked the car up from the dealers on Saturday morning.

They have replaced the oil pressure regulator as it was found to be faulty. I quizzed them on any potential damage to the engine from this and they have assured me that there was plenty of oil in the engine so no damage would have been done.

In addition, they have as requested done the security update and also replaced the CD player. The service guy told me that they had to re-programme the entire car when replacing the CD player, not sure how true that is?!?!

My only gripe is that the drivers seat and door panel (which are beige leather) are now filthy. So I need to ring them today about that. Although with this weather, the car is parked up at home now so don't know when I would get it back to them to clean it!!

All in all, reasonable service from Elms Stansted.
