Help Lads: Bonnet "Thingy", what's it called?

Hi ya all,

What's this called? There are 2 at the front of the car. The shaft is sprung. One of mine in broken.

Also, what do they do? I'm guessing they pop the bonnet up when you release the bonnet catches?

That’s a tricky one because they are really well hidden in realoem diagrams in wheelhouse/engine support section. They are pn 51248187291, Buffer stop with ejector. I think pre-facelifts had a more simple part, with no ejector.

Its an adjustable bump stop for the bonnet - so it sits tight
The spring loaded screw pops out to allow you to adjust the Rubber stop up and down so the bonnet sits tight.
You can actually uncrew the bump stop itseld - there is a coarse thread in the rubber. Unscrew it to have a look.

Looks like DMike is right, eBay seems to suggest they are expensive what they are but won’t break the bank.

There was some discussion on another forum that on a e86 coupe there are two of these in front for the hood and two in the rear hatch - and that changing those rear hatch ones to stronger ones would make the hatch pop up a bit more, making it easier to open. Don’t have a coupe and cannot confirm this, but they wrote that the front and rear ones are interchangable.

If you change one, then buy another. I fitted one to replace a broken one and the next day , the other then broke :roll:
