Got the vent out, pulled the radio. I took the advice of Black SapphireZ and bought the aux connector for the E46 and saved money. How does the connector go in - wires toward the side of the radio box (and the "angled" top of the connector toward the inside) or the wires toward the inside? Either way, when the radio is on and the MODE is switched, I get no AUX, just a message on the radio display that there is no CD in the unit. I do not have the 6 CD changer and I did not have to pull a black plastic plug to gain access to the input pins.
BTW, for those of you about to this project, the vents are difficult to get out. There are a number of helpful pictures if you search. What you need to do is pry the metal locks down. I was succesful in getting the vent out by using one of a set of metal picks I purchased from Griot's. A dentists curved tool might help, too. You need to get up into the metal tab and bring it down with one hand and hold it there as your other hand holds a flashlight to see what you are doing. Then with your other hand you can simpley pull the vent out! The back of the vent seals itself to the dash-vent-housing, so it doesn't exactly fall out. Work it gently and it will pull out. I put some masking tape over the dash metal (or wood if you have it on the dash)so that when prying the top of the vent out, there would be no marring.
Well, all of that went easily enough. Now I can't get the AUX to light up on the radio display. The connector that I got for the E46 looks nothing like what everyone elese was using. Might have to just get the correct one.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
