My Z4 failed to start recently. The fault code indicated that the problem was related to the camshaft position sensors. I purchased 2 new ones and replaced them. The car still won't start yet the plugs spark and petrol is being injected. I searched the web for a maintenance manual/electrical diagram but there doesn't appear to have been one published.
I used the BentlyPublishers test procedure, posted on youtube, to check the sensors. The procedure says to check for 12v between pins 1 & 3, and 5v between pins 2 & 3. Both checks on my sensors return a measurement of 12v i.e. pins 1 to 3 and pins 2 to 3 read 12v. The BentlyPublishers sensor procedure is for a BMW 3 Series E46, not for a Z4, so I would appreciate any help as to whether the voltage readings that I see are correct for my model.
Another issue, which may or may not be related to the car not starting, is that over the past couple of weeks my key fob has failed to open the central locking system, and to deactivate the alarm on a couple of occasions. I have had to open the car using the key, which triggers the alarm, and then turn the ignition on to deactivate it, after which the key fob works OK. There are currently no issues with the key so there appears be an intermittent fault. I thought I would mention this in case there is a link between the two faults.
