Hello!

I've had a few BMW's over the years and currently drive a 640d GC.

In the past I've owned Alfa's and on two wheels a couple of Ducati's and the usual Japanese stuff.

I'm currently trying to persuade my wife that a Z4M Coupe or to start a Z4 Coupe should be in the garage as a summer toy.

I know that I can get a nice Z4 Coupe for £10k but Z4MC's have just gone through the roof. Cars that I was looking at before Christmas have gone up in price even though they didn't sell. There is a nice blue Z4MC in north London but the price is eye watering!

Any advice welcome.

Well firstly, welcome. :D

Secondly, medically speaking your wife does not require two kidneys, just saying.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

3.0Si Coupe prices are if anything higher now than when I bought my first one in 2014. :o

I've had a 1 Series and four 3 Series and the Z4 Coupes just feel so much more special than to any of them when you are sat low down just in front of the rear wheels.

I had an inheritance a few years ago and went to look at an MC in May 2019, but couldn't drive it far as it was SORN'd and there were ANPR cameras in the area. While I was trying to decide it sold anyway. Then a few months later I went to look at another one for a forum member and got a proper drive, knew I just had to have one and found mine in December 2019 - I just love it. :D

I've always thought the 3.0Si was 80% of the experience for 50% of the money, but if you lust after that last 20% it's worth paying the extra. 3.0Sis come with run-flat tyres, but plenty of people find fitting non-runflats helps, but M's also have Hydraulic PAS and an LSD and IME drive just that bit better.

And while the N52 engine in the 3.0Si is terrific the S54 in the MC is just something so special.

But running costs on an M are way higher so you need to factor that in. Every other service is a Service 1 or Service 2 that requires valve clearances to be checked and adjusted with shims - if there are a few other things that need attention it is easy to get a 4 figure bill! And at some point it's worth getting the crank rod bearing shells and engine mounts replaced which another four figure bill. Consumables like brakes are also subject to the "M" tax!

My understanding is that the shells tend to wear when the car is driven hard before it is fully up to temperature, and as my car had 7 previous keepers it seemed a good idea to get mine replaced at 78k miles. Half of them had copper showing so I was glad I had.

I'd suggest trying to get a drive in a 3.0Si first to see if you like the E86, because if you drive an MC you might find that only an MC will do!

And don't bother with the Roadster, get it's better looking sibling!
