Hello and a seat question

Hi all,

I’m looking for a Z4, around 2013 to 2016 and getting a bit confused about the specifications.

Are there both manual and electric seats and if there are any with electric, did some or all have memory functions?

Also is there a way to tell if the seats are electric from the photos of the car?

What’s a comfort package?

Do all the BMW Professional Audio systems have 12GB of storage for your own music?

What’s extended storage?

Do they all have Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems?

Thanks

Most of the information is here: https://www.bmwbrochures.co.uk/0114/BMW_Z4_E89_LCI/files/inc/1d253fa797.pdf

It depends on the model what came as standard but it's all in the above brochure.

I think they do all have tyre pressure monitoring, but came as two types. The basic one (FTMS) which works via the abs and the TPMS which has sensors in the valves. Easy to spot if it has TPMS as the valve stems are larger and usually metal with a hex flat near the wheel.

Extended storage is two elastic straps in the boot carpet, a ping pong net behind the seats, a net in the passenger footwell and a tiny little drawer to the right of the steering wheel which many take years to find!

Normal and Sports seats all have options...
Heated.
Electric movement, with memory.
Side bolsters.
Lumber support.

All are options, nothing is standard!!

Comfort package included the rear diffuser..

The 12gb storage space was on the idrive hard disk ,,the CIC version..it’s a crap way to store music ..much better almost any other way..

Electric seats all with driver memory but rare as only standard on late model 3 litre variants otherwise a £945 option. Also not that easy to tell if a car has them from just pics as on the seat base (same as manual) but you'd imagine it would be included in the description as a selling point.

My tips when looking for a car are to firstly get hold of a brochure to see what options there are, decide what are your must haves and what's likely - fewer options on base models, and then get hold of the VIN and put it into a decoder so that you can see exactly what options that car does have. That way you don't end up guessing or being disappointed.

But not all electric came with Lumber and/or Side Bolster adjustment, as they are separate options.
Things to look for in dodgy photos, manual seats are easier to spot in that they have the forward/backward adjustment lever sticking out the front, and the two height levers show up very well from most angles. Rule of thumb, if you can't see the seat adjusters (manual or electric) then it's possibly one of two things 1) they are only manual, or 2) the seller doesn't know their way around a Z4.

I think only in last year they threw everything in, save it sat on a shelf in warehouse i assume.
I've got a late 2016 made E89. No leccy seats, basic stereo (have I mentioned this before?).
It is in Estoril Blue, so was one of the last made. I'm still not sure it has the updated cam chain gear, either. :?

Electric Seats: they’ll zap your balls if you’re driving at 40 mpg.

Comfort Package: yes, handy when your balls get zapped.

Extended Storage: where you put the Comfort Package.

:P

Is the rear diffuser B51 mentioned not the same as option 387 wind deflector?

I was referring to the rear diffuser BMW called 'deflector'..technically it not a 'deflector' as it doesn't 'deflect' wind (like a solid /glass screen)..the air goes through it in a structured way ie diffuses!..anyway..moving on..

I wasn't referring to the bit of plastic at the bottom of the rear bumper..thats called 'diffusor nozzle'

Whatever it is, I've got it, diffuser /deflector. Also got a lot of electricity buttons on both seats. :D :driving:

Just remember its a sports car and all weight added makes it slower!

All the electric motors adds weight and how ofter do you actually adjust the seat?
Once when you buy it and maybe again at MOT/ service times so maybe twice a year. Is it worth wanting add all that extra weight??

Errr..

So it’s about 5kg in 1,700 kg…ie not a lot..it’s centralised mass so its impact on handling is negligible,. :tumbleweed:

On a road trip I often move the seats a little whilst driving to help ease any back aches / cramps etc..

Having had both it’s definitely the way to go.if it comes as part of your other criteria..

Is it? Is it really?? :driving:
I'm sure some will argue with me on my comment, but the Z4 isn't a sports car, it's a fast tourer, but not a sports car in the true sense. Far too weighty, especially with the bloody great metal roof it's got. It's built a lot for comfort and got weightier over it's reincarnations from the Z1 to the Z3 to the e85 Z4 to the e89 Z4. But that's the market and what people want. There are proper sports cars out there that are light and built especially for speed and handling if that's what you want, with loads of carbon fibre everywhere, but, at the end of the day, you're not going to turn an e89 into a proper sports car by not having an electric motor for moving the seat. IMHO

An E89 isn't a sportscar.
Or is it? A debate that has rumbled on and on. :)

With 3 tonnes of stuff to operate the roof, I don't think a couple of tiny extra motors will make a difference.
