Heater fan speeds/demisting

My '07 Z4 appears to have developed demisting problems. I am not able to crank up the fan speeds though there is the discernible slow turning noise with some air coming out the vents. The 'snow' demist button doesnt light up when pressed. I have checked the blade fuses and all appear ok. Trying to avoid main dealer visit so any help welcome. Car is parked outside but is very low mileage. Cheers, Paul.

Hello Paul... welcome as see it's your first post to the forum.

Hope u get it fixed soon, am sure someone will come along soon with some sound advice. If you're anywhere near Kent, can recommend a couple of places if necessary

By snow demist you mean the button in the centre of the temp control and not the air con button next to the fan speed right? That is actually for max cooling and does not work in cold weather. You want to use the button in the centre of the vent direction dial on the other side with the windscreen symbol. (applies to automatic temp systems only) This also turns on the air con for drier air, but directs most air to the windscreen, which the max cooling button does not do. It should also work in cold weather.

Anyway, that is just FYI, it probably has nothing to do with your actual problem. Some people have had issues with the fan speed controller, still sometimes called "hedgehog" though it looks nothing like one any more. I had one instance where a mouse family took up residence in the blower in a little used vehicle (not my Zed though). It kept the fan from spinning fast and blocked most air flow. Fixed by simply removing the blower and extracting mouse family and associated nesting material.

Thanks guys. Yes, get it with the various controls. Fan blockage might be issue as found evidence of nesting mice under the bonnet . I will have to try taking the heater vents etc apart. But keep any other comments coming as all input welcomed. Paul.

I had a similar problem with a E46 3 series I had.

The fan speed would not go to high speed ( check by operating manually)

The cause was a faulty resistor on the circuit board. It was a common failure

I soldered a new one in and save myself a few hundred pounds..

Hi all,

I have the same symptoms as Paulc67 on my '07 Z4 with fuses ok.

Are there more details available for

1. Checking for 'fan blockage'.

2. Checking the 'circuit board'.

TIA,

Andy

Hi Andy,

This could also be that the car has gone into transport mode. Check if the heated rear window and air on buttons work. If not, the car is in transport mode, probably caused by the battery getting low on charge / going flat.

Th only way to resolve is a dealer or independent specialist visit for this setting in the ECU to be changed.

Hope this helps.

James

Hi James,
yes, that could be the answer. I couldn't drive the car much during the summer and the battery did go flat. I'm surprised though that I didn't spot that the blower/air con/de-mister weren't working over Sept/Oct, although it was relatively warm and I'm still not currently driving it daily.

I'll check with the stealer...

Thanks very much!

Cheers,

Andy
