Heater blows out cold air unless on maximum.

Hi there,

Was driving just now with the top down as its not a bad evening, it was a bit fresh so I put the heater on auto at about 22degrees and it blew out cold air (had air on turned off) so I turned it up and it still blew out cold air, until I out it it on maximum and it blew out air so hot it felt though it was burning my legs.
It was the same not on manual until I got to maximum again.

Any ideas guys? :)

Am intrested in this post as I have this problem with my classic vw golf. Are your water levels correct in your expansion tank? Hope you get your heater working correctly soon, good luck!

Hmm one possibility is the climate control sensors, perhaps its broken (the climate control knobs are a complete unit with the circuitry to balance temperature etc).

Another possibility is the mixing flap stepper motor has lost fine control. It can still move the flap to full open or closed because it hits a stop, but it can no longer do the little steps in between. Or maybe the flap encounters some resistance so that only motor movement to full open or closed is strong enough to overcome it.

Hmmm interesting, same undocumented feature on my car, though I think that it's just because the weather's warmed up, the innards are much warmer than usual so the on board climate control thinks it's much warmer - net result, only giving it large on the temp do you get anything.

Hope this s all it is, as the other night when it was cooler it was back to its normal self

Im hoping it is the same situation with me, today it does seem a little more controlled.
I'll have to see how it goes.

Thankyou for the replies guys :D
