Heated Wing Mirrors

So, I was stuck in traffic this morning and put the window down for a bit of fresh air. Whilst the window was down I started fiddling with my wing mirror. During this time I noticed that the wing mirror was warm and therefore the heater was on. However, I thought the heated wing mirrors only worked when you had the heated rear window on.... Evidently not. I checked it toward the end of my journey as well to see if it was something that came on when you started the car and then cut off automatically but the mirror was still warm.

Can anyone confirm for me if this is normal?
 
Yes, on all the time. However, i've done over 500k miles and never has the glass fall out. Must be luck of the draw.
 
Wondered about this as mine are always on when I have the window down. Why would BMW do this?
 
Suppose you could wire a relay in if it bothers you. Does seem odd though. Could understand it on start up or with heated rear... but all the time?
 
Better to be on all the time than how the newer BMW's work. Technically there is no way to switch them on. They come on when the temperature drops below 7 degrees, or if you wipers are on.

Pain in the arse if you need to clear the dew in the autumn mornings.

Luckily I worked out they do come in the the auto wipers. So enabling them wipes the screen once and turns the mirrors on, although at reduced rate as its above 7 degrees.

Might use this to warm my hands a bit if stuck in traffic with the roof down in winter.

Seems like less of a waste of energy then....
 
aww shame :thumbsdown: , thought i just cracked my battery drain until i came across this thread lol
