Wow, I always thought it just came on with the rear defrost button. My passenger side glass shakes around at motorway speeds but adjustment and heating still works, so I'm waiting for it to fly off one day soon...

Better than newer BMW's though where you cannot turn them on yourself. Only option is if you have auto wipers then they can be switched on by activating the wipers.

Im under the impression there ONLY on when you turn on the Heated Rear Screen, which itself turns off after 5min.

You can feel it for yourself simply by turning your engine on and letting it idle for a bit, then touch the glass and it'll be warm.
Never tried but ill take your word for on it.
Back to the original question though, why do you need to control them? If they are on all the time isnt that a good thing?
