Heart vs head 2.8 vs 2.0

Hi everyone,

So I have been set on buying a Z4 for a while and have finally decided to take the plunge. Ive got a reasonable budget and have been seeing some great pre reg offers that can get me a 2.0 with the works, sat nav, comfort package and heated seats.Oh and auto transmission for the mrs.

I finally test drove the 2.0 last week and I liked it, my only sticking point was that while it was quick, it didn't have that surge of speed that really gets you excited. But it was something I decided I could live with as the 2.8 seemed way out of budget.

However I've just seen a 2.8 auto for around for a few K above my budget and without sat nav which was quite a big thing in our initial requirements. I'm going to test drive the 2.8 most likely later today and I've got a feeling I'm going to love it.

Question is, is it worth blowing the budget and not having sat nav for that extra power...

Would be interesting to see if anyone else had a similar dilemma when they bought their zed.

Cheers guys, Will

Highly subjective.

For me I'd have power over toys. Lots here feel the other way around though. Its down to what you want at the end of the day, what excites you more, no one can make your mind up for you, just offer what they'd do... :)

As said, if its a compromise between power or toys, then everyone will be different.

Once you've driven the 28i then that might make your mind up for you!

Personally, I would rather have the toys, but others are different.

You can add a tomtom to the 28i for cheaper than adding power to the 20i!

I test drove a 20i and a 28i and ended up with the 28i, there was a lot of difference in performance as the BHP figures would indicate.

I got all the toys as well, so I'd find it very hard to make a call on your question. I do love the satnav and idrive system, they make the car for me, but then, as said, we are all different.

Well willc8 we had a budget and the primary focus was to get as much power as we could for the budget. We'd have liked an iS but there wasn't one available in our price range so we went for a 35i with all the toys.

Power everytime :driving: for us, but like all the posters have said its a very personal thing.

Hey, don't rush. Am sure with a small bit of patience & perseverence you'lll find one with both the extra umph & toys.

My preference is if it looks the part, then it has to act the part so my vote's always for the extra horses under the hood, espeially given the performance of many mid range rep mobiles

I went for power and ditched the sat nav and don't regret it. I have a Tom Tom and have only used it once in the Z. Heated seats are a must and heated steering wheel is good too.

Well I'm very much a toys man however.... I've had my mini clubman cooper d (loaded with just about everything) for 2 years now, and most of the time yern after what I could have had - a clubman JCW, but without toys.

I think toys make a car feel special, but then the heart and soul of a car comes from its engine and how it makes you feel.

I was in exactly the same position as you, but went for the 2.0i as it had the spec I wanted and in the colour I wanted (silver). The 2.8 that I could of had was in black, and whilst I do really love the zed in black it's too much effort to keep lookin lovely for me.
I think the 2.0i is quicker than the 2.3i I had before and the auto box is fantastic (as most of my driving is city centre) and the paddles work great if you want a bit more feel......however I think if you can get the 2.8i in the colour you want I’d rather have that than the sat nav!!
Either way you won’t be disappointed.

Tough one. I loved the 2.0 auto on first test drive but I was coming from a 1.6 golf with zero power. I'd be bored in traffic without the idrive it is hooked up to my iphone with album covers etc flashing up and you can split the screen between entertainment and the maps.

Having been on the forum and read more about the car I do think I should have tried the bigger engines but the deal I wanted was at the time only on the 2.0. They seem to be doing great deals on every engine size now.

Ive just traded in my 330d coupe for the 2.0is and thought I would miss the performance as the coupe made 60 in 6 seconds and thats including having to change into 3rd gear - so genuinely quick.

To be fair though, ive not missed it anywhere near as much as I thought I would as you cant really exploit this type of performance much these days in this country.

Years ago I used to have a Honda S2000 which was fine on a bone dry day but difficult in the wet, consequently I used to love summer as once the top was down I loved pottering about at less than warp 1. Hope this will be the same in the Z.

Personal taste I guess, but I'm sure you'd love either

If your heart says 2.8i than that is the one you should get, when I purchased my first zed a 2.5Si it was as much as I was willing to pay at the time, but so wished I had gone for the 3.0l. Next time around there was no way I wasn't going for the 3.0l. As for Sat Nav, nice to have but doesn't make your heart miss a beat when you jump on the loud pedal :D

I drove both and went for the 28 as I didnt think the 20 felt any faster than the 120d coupe I was leaving

Keep your cash in your pocket until the right car comes along. Thats a one that ticks all the boxes.

Register your interest with a dealer and be very specific about your must haves.

Then be very patient and dont be tempted when they phone and tell you they have one that has almost everything!
