heads up for funny rattling noises

two weeks ago my roadster developed a metallic rattling, from rear'ish passenger side. most noticable when either passenger window or roof down driving across rough toad surfaces (e.g. the typically crap fill jobs the utilities do when digging trenches).

initial suspicion was in my mind a loose heat shield or similar around exhaust etc...

booked into local (nearest) dealer last week - they had it for 90 minutes and diagnosed loose shield underneath and described the fixes they undertook. 3/4 mile up road it was back........

so back in again the other day for the full day ..... this time when i came back they said it had lost a clip that holds rear pads in caliper (see real oem or google part no. 34212282198) - it was apparently missing from passeneger rear caliper [ doh to me for not noticing as it is pretty obvious component, but WTF was it not seen on first visit?]

so anybody with similar - go make a quick check. part was replaced under AUC warranty - probably emabrassed they didn't spot in first time around.

TBC on another issue next week ;-( :o

Very tricky for the dealer to diagnose stuff like that really I wouldnt be at all surprised if your problem was still there after this part was fitted. Cant see pads making a metallic rattling noise......needs a bit of perseverence sometimes with stuff like that. As an ex Renault owner I could write a book on it :D

surprisingly the rattle has well and truly gone. they were at great pains to tell me brake performance had not been affected without clip. i think, first visit, they just followed my inital prompting and went straight underneath. having fixed what didn't need fixing they started afresh on second visit, but I'd have thought they'd have done a pretty methodical visual first time and ought to have spotted the clip.

funny thing was they told me there was lots of rattles from inside car .... i suggested that might not be what BMW would like them to say about a AUC 3 yr £48K (new) ///M.....?

Tell me about rattles!

I thought my entire engine was going to blow up the other month, sounded terminal... in the end a stone had jumped up onto the tray under the engine, the perfect size and shape to get in there while cornering, and not come out again, not get crushed, but it made an absolute racket about 50% of the time, and merely rattled alot the rest of the time!

What a bugger to find. I had wheels off, checking springs, engine on/off while driving, trying different gears. It really can often be the most simple silly little thing (and it was and has been in your case and mine)!
