Groupon have a 550D and lenses on offer for £495.

Hmmm. Tempted to buy a Christmas present for Wee Bing well in advance... Not sure though. We're talking a pair of painted aero skirts for this money :P
 
550d is a great camera, plus the wealth of Canon glass available and a year's warranty!
 
I thought you get a 600D with lens for about that these days? I'll have a quick scan.

EDIT: I noticed Carol's GroupOn deal also included the 75-300mm EF-S lens as well as the usual 18-55mm so seems quite a good price.

A 600D with just the 18-55mm is £378 online. I think it's the more or less the same camera as the 550d but it has an LCD screen which pivots out (very useful I've found).

Can't find a 550d on panamoz or digitalrev

both however do a 600d with twin lenses for a little more money.

In all fairness, these are all kit lenses so while they're good, they're not great.

Personally, for people starting out, a 600d with a fast prime (e.g. 50mm f1.8) would be a better option for a beginner
