Headlights: broken adjuster = new headlight?!

Hi guys,

My 2004 3.0i has just failed its MOT due to one (halogen) headlight aiming too high.

My regular mechanic tells me the adjuster mech has broken and it'll prob need a new headlight - he's not had time to fully investigate yet, but I'd like to get an idea of my options / opinions of any fellow owners who've had similar issues...

Any thoughts appreciated.

I'm not too sure if you've had the same problem, however this might give you an idea.

Have a look at the back of the headlight, is it one of the adjuster arms which has broken? As that causes the bulb housing to lie well out of position and won't allow to be adjusted correctly. Popped a link to an older post of mine.

Ah great - thanks Tom. I hope it's something as "simple" as that rather than having to fork out for a new headlight.

Will get the araldite primed...

Update: The adjuster is missing completely! Who knows how it passed its MOT last time (didn't own it then) and no wonder on the few occasions I've driven it at night I've been flashed once or twice. My Indy has done some searching for me but no breakers seem to have one and his non OEM supplier wants even more than BMW, so it's £370+VAT plus fitting :headbang:

Ah well, will just have to have a cheaper holiday than planned at the end of Feb :|
 
I would be shocked if you couldn't just rig the light to aim properly. You can shim it or adjust the mounting somehow. I bet 30 minutes of tinkering could save you a lot of money. Use the other light as reference to find the proper aim point - park in front of a wall or garage door and see where the lights shine.
