headlight restoration kit

I'm considering giving mine to a detailer to clean up professionally. For the cost of the kits, polishes etc its probably about the same.

So it's not just me with this particular problem?

No, its fairly common on modern plastic lenses - the light strength fades over the years due to the abuse the lenses take (salt, grit etc). It can be reduced somewhat through the use of headlamp protection (I use these)

I bought a set of rear facelift lights for my conversion

when they arrive from the states they were not in the best condition - marked and light scratchs all over them

I bought some of that turtle light restorer and went to work on them - Took 15 mins per light, all by hand - I was more than happy with the outcome

My headlights have little stone chips and marks etc and think the only way to revive them to be perfect would be to sand them back and polish them up, hence wanting to go to a pro rather than me screw them up. I have no polisher and have never attempted to use a powered polisher.

Tried the Turtle Wax yesterday and also quite happy with the result. Now the left headlight looks foggy (it wasn't at first) so will do that side too on the weekend. When sanding down I was afraid that I ruined the headlight because it looked awful but after the last step it all cleared up and looks great.

Results look very good !! I used some rubbing down compound I picked up from halfords it did an ok job for the monry tempted to try the turtle wax kit now though having seen these pictures.

I got mine from ebay (UK Seller)

Not bad at all. What's in the kit?

I rang a good detailer in my area and he quoted £15-20 to sand/polish them to remove all the chips and dings, so either way about the same money.

the kit comes with 4 sand pads (different grades) and cleaning / abrasive cream

Please note, do follow the instructions and dont try and rush the job by skipping pads as you will only have to put more effort in

Like ranski says. Read the instructions first and make yourself familiar with the order of steps. From there its straight forward. I did it twice as I was not happy with the first take.

Through a discussion I had with a Bayer Plastics division technician my understanding is that many polycarbonate automotive lenses actually have a UV protective and scratch resisting coating on the outside. So an abrasive process such as this would remove that coating. Obviously the lens material is UV stabilised too, but with the outer coating removed it would accelerate the yellowing process.

Does anybody know if the Z4 lenses have this extra coating or not? My headlights don't look too bad, but after seeing the "after" shots that thefmister posted I do feel the urge to make mine look like new also!

I guess if BMW do then it doesn't work very well hence why people are using these kits

Or BMW don't hence why people are using these kits

I wouldn't worry about it - just give it a go
