Headlight outer ring issue

Hey everyone,

My 2006 Z4MC has developed a broken light issue on the driver side. It's the angle eyes (or whatever they are called) that is the circular light around the main beam which is normally on when the main beam is on.

Just wondering what is the procedure in fixing this myself or if I would have to take this to the stealers for repair? If so, what sort of damage to the wallet should I expect?

Thanks everyone!

What do you mean by broken? Is something physically damaged? In what way? Or do you mean the bulb is out? Halogen or xenon HID headlights? (The angel eyes are different in each one)

FYI, with xenon HID headlights, the outer ring is inactive. It has no bulb, it is illuminated by refracting some of the main beam's light.

The light is out on the outer ring for my E86 M Coupe. I'm not sure if it's Halogen or Xenon, though I suspect it may be xenon. The main bulb is fine and operating as normal. Both normal and high beam are functional. It's just the outer ring on the driver's side that's out.

As mentioned, xenon HID headlights do not have an active ring, I'm thinking you have halogens if the other side is working. If you have a thumb wheel to adjust height you have halogens. You just need to replace the bulb probably. Access is through the wheel well, the upper door in the arch. You can access by turning the wheel, but it's much easier to see what you're doing if you can remove the wheel. Inside the door is a cover held on with a wire bail, remove this and you can access the bulbs. Be sure the cover is fitted properly upon replacement or water will get into the electrics.

The bulb should be inexpensive, available at any auto parts supply. I don't know if it's the same with halogens, but the angel eye bulb for the xenons is fitted semi permanently into a BMW holder. The holder IS rather costly, but you can reuse it with some careful drilling.

I did some research on youtube and found that even with HID (which I should have since mine is a M) the angle eyes are lit with one additional bulb via fiber optics.

Would anyone know what the replacement bulb should be for the E86 M?

You can't believe everything you see on the Internet. The OEM outer ring is lit by a light guide, not fibre. There is no extra bulb, the light comes from the xenon beam. The inner ring is lit by a separate bulb, the one with the pricey holder you can reuse with some drilling. If your outer ring is lit without the xenon beam being on, you do not have OEM HID xenons.

There's no reason you should believe me any more than any one else. I don't care if you believe me or not. This is the OEM HID setup as I know it, based on direct observation and BMW publications which I'm unable to locate easily and it's not worth any more of my time to dig deeper, sorry. The inner ring bulb without the holder is Osram 39423 64113.

please post a picture.

Facelift headlights only use the inner ring to light up, the outer ring is a dummy and only is lite when main xenon or halogen is on. Unless you have had retro fit angel eys to the headlights just check the passenger side.

This is what the should look like:

The outer ring definitely doesn't have a bulb ive had mine completely in bits the get them looking like this

Exactly the same lights.

Yep either by a new bulb including holder as it's one piece from a dealer or you can try to separate the bulb from the holder.
