Headlight condensation/flooding

Hi all

Looking for some ideas as to what my issue may be.

When I bought the car the previous owner had replaces a ballast, but I had to change the other one as I noticed water in the headlight and concluded this was the issue with the ballast. After giving it the hair dryer treatment, and it being summer, I was happy with the work and the headlights worked.

After quite a bit of rain I noticed the headlights filled with water again, frying the ballast grrrrr.

So this time I decided to do it properly. New ballasts and brand new OEM plastic gasket coves. I also restored the headlights, polishing them and sanding them so they looked beautiful once again.

Drove it home and noticed one side had slight condensation but good news! No water! Checked this morning after a lot of heavy rain last night and guess what, one side is full of water again!! What is causing this? I haven’t driven the car so it can’t of kicked up from the wheel arch? Besides there’s new gasket covers and as far as I’m aware this is the only way water can get in?!

My wheel arch covers need replacing, as some of the locking notches are broken so the back of the gasket cover does get muddy and probably wet, but surely water can’t get in through the new gasket cover? And besides, this time around the car was sat on the driveway during the heavy rain.

Do I have to accept that the headlight itself isn’t sealed anymore and will have to buy new headlights? The only other notable point is the front bumper doesn’t line up very well anymore, a fairly large gap between bumper and headlight. But again, as far as I’m aware this shouldn’t matter too much because the headlight is supposedly a sealed unit.

Anyways enough rambling any help will be much appreciated. I’d hate for the ballast to fry again, especially now we’re in winter.

Cheers

Before buying new headlights try using NON-Harding Silcon Grease on the Rubber seals of the new OEM plastic gasket covers that you installed.
(These are the rear caps for the headlights, right??)

If that fails, your headlights more than likely are not sealed. If that is the case, as a last resort you might want to consider removing the headlight unite and spray all of the black plastic with "never wet". This may reseal the headlight. Search "never wet" on youtube for more info.

Thanks for the recommendation, I thought as much! It’s so soul destroying having to take the bumper off again to access the headlights for a 3rd time. I’ll keep you posted.
