Handling

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had replaced the springs on their Z4, if so did you notice a real improvement in the handling?

I really love my new toy (2010 Z4 23), I just feel that the handling could be slightly better and I cannot decided if it is down to the 4 year old run flats that are on the car, or the springs?

Any information would be appreciated.

:)

The standard coils are not ideal. Either H&R or Eibach will very noticeably improve your handling. The runflats have to go. If you really want to bring it alive - add a Stage 1 tuning kit. (Plug in electronic remap only) Burger Tuning offers some real value for money. If you still have the original shock absorbers - they will need replacing. Your car will be transformed without sacrificing reliability.

I would not be dismissive of run flats , BMW specified them for a reason ,as I've said elsewhere I would not want my wife/daughter stuck at the roadside in the dark in the pouring rain with flat tyre and no spare !!!!! ,it's just some thing you may want to consider ,also when you start tuning /suspension /engine mods it may affect the resale value ,,enjoy the car it's brill. 8)

IMHO the largest issue with the e89's handling is weight, which is much harder to resolve as an issue. While you can firm up the suspension etc its still a damn heavy car, it feels it when throwing it around. In fact I was driving a friends Honda Civic recently and was shocked how much better that handles to the e89. Sure its FWD and therefore there's little push but the steering had better feel and turn it was very sharp compared to the understeer you get pre-programmed into the e89 by BMW to stop twits from losing control.
