Handbreak leaver slips out, when lifting up sometime

Hi Guys,

This is an odd one. Sometime when I'm applying the handbreak, it seems to "snap" away from its housing. A simple press of the button and push back down, then back up again and everything is fine. Not sure what it could be. Seems like its slipping away from its teeth when applying the handbreak. Thats the only way I can explain it.

Any ideas?
 
There's a spring on the handbrake lever that helps it bind into the teeth.

Mine did this when the spring was coming off..

lift the covers up inside the car and you should be able to see the spring.. get at it with a screwdriver and you should be able to force it back in its hole if it has indeed slipped.

however, be warned, this was a sign of imminent failure for me, and I ended up having to replace the lever entirely (cheers BMW!)
 
I get this occasionally too - it's always a surprise when it happens! It's never annoyed me enough to do anything about it though.
 
I've had exactly the same happen to me twice now, also once I slammed the bootlid down and the car rolled away in a 'You've Been Framed' style - managed to stop it in time and no damage but handbrake had disengaged. MOT went ok and didn't pick anything up so now will have a look for this spring issue. In the meantime I park on full lock aimed at something solid nearby - just in case! :?
 
I was taught to always park a car in gear - hand brakes aren't that reliable and I must say the handbrake on my Zed is pretty poor.
