Very good video on how to adjust the handbrake here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgMlBzdKLyA
It is worth mentioning that the adjusters are positioned as follows
Drivers side RHD can be viewed through the wheel bolt hole at 11 o'clock and the passenger side RHD at 2 o'clock when looking at the Drum/Disc

A well detailed video. When I did mine, I failed at the point of compressing the spring under the handbrake lever. I couldn't force the spring in enough for it to clip.

Next time try backing off the adjusters at each wheel before trying to compress the spring latch, there is a special two pronged tool for this but its just as hard to use as a long flat blade screwdriver. The lack of tension at the shoes end may allow the spring to compress easier.
A good clout with a hammer on the end of your chosen latching tool may assist in shocking the spring to compress as well.
