The silica gel doesn't absorb as much water as the salt crystals. I've tried both obviously the calcium chloride is a bad idea and the silica gel can help with minor misting but they fill up very quickly. I put 3 10gram bags in 1 headlight. Didn't even last a week :/
I don't think silicone is a good idea to seal the rear covers etc., what about the butyl cord stuff they use on the door membranes? that stuff always stays soft & flexible for years, and can be removed with a gob of the same stuff easily? It looks like it will make a horrible mess, but doesn't, just don't wear rubber gloves, it sticks to them like buggery!
