Had a few 'issues' today. Advice sought.

Hi all.

My Zed didn't behave itself today and I'd welcome the opinion of the experts here. It's only covered 28k miles and had an inspection 1 with no advisories about 400 miles/2 months ago. It's a 56 Reg 3.0 si Roadster.

The time before last when I drove it I did notice a little hesitation when pulling away. I'd describe the feeling as a cylinder not firing. This was quite minor and I think it seemed to solve itself. No warning lights came on and I thought nothing more of it.

The car was however very low on fuel when I garaged it two weeks ago and I took it out again today. Same little 'misfire' again, perhaps more severe. It was then OK for about 10 miles when bad things happened. One cylinder (perhaps two) stopped firing and the EML came on. Then the warning light for low coolant came on as well. (Though only partly, it sort of varied in brightness and then went off). At this point I was on the motorway and as I left it again around 10 miles later the problem completely cleared. I assumed perhaps a blocked injector that became good but I'm no mechanic.

Anyway, driving home this evening the same thing happened for a few miles (with the automatic transmission light coming on for a little bit - weird in a manual car) but then everything came good and it seemed OK. I do think that the battery had probably got a bit flat after at least two weeks of no use, and I also think that a virtually empty tank of fuel didn't help. Those two things might be red herrings though and I shall book the car into the independent who performed the inspection one so that they can run a diagnostic on it.

I would however be interested in opinions here, and I should also say that despite those two fluid warnings, there is no sign of any leaks anywhere and I'm absolutely certain that they've had been attended to when recently inspected.

Cheers all.

Battery trickle charge for 24 hours would be my first step .
When i had my 3.0 Si it was a weekender & lived on trickle charger through the week , there's a lot of gadgetry +gizmos & a dodgy battery will soon show its weakness

OK, thanks. Unbelievably I drove the car into the garage so that I could get the battery close to a plug socket, and only then did I remember that the battery is in the boot. Doh.

Had this been a Mk3 Escort I'd have whipped off the negative connection, whacked on the charger and job done. I assume that's still the procedure but I have a worry that disconnection the battery might set the alarm off, reset all sorts of things and also require a radio code.

Is it really just a case of doing the above, because at 10pm I really don't want to mess things up too much...

The charge points are under bonnet / not directly onto battery & at no time did i ever disconnect any terminal's

Ah, see now I'm glad I asked. I'm sure I can find them. Presumably I have to leave the battery connected (because it won't be able to receive a charge otherwise).

Thanks

Once you see them then they are easy to find :P otherwise i would take a peep in the handbook first

I don't have a handbook or I wouldn't have asked. I know they can be downloaded, but having started the thread with an issue that wasn't necessarily a case of just charging the battery, I thought it reasonable to conclude the discussion.

Anyway, I shall charge the battery tomorrow and hopefully bring things will be sorted.

Thanks to all.

It does sound electrical supply related because so many odd things happened at the same time.

If the battery was bad though, I would not expect to see such issues if the alternator is OK. Possibly could be an alternator problem also.

I had all sorts of lights on with my various batteries that were dying. I'm trying to drive it more, the battery would certainly be my first port of call.

You could also purchase a cheap OBD scanner from eBay and next time it/something happens, plug-in and diagnose. Does sound battery related but could be a number of things. Lean mixture, dirty fuel, coil packs, dodgy earth lead/connection.

Hope its a simple fix for you.

The engine misfire sounds very like my symptoms (2008 3.0si) sorted by a coil being replaced (Cylinder 5)

My EML came on and then went out and then on again some days later. My symptoms happened intermittently and the warning lights went on and off. No other warning lights though.

Took the dealers two visits and 5 days to sort this though! Thankfully on warranty.

Hope you get sorted.

:driving:
