H&R Anti-Roll bars

I want to uprate the anti-roll bars and I am aware of the possibility of pulling the brackets from their mounting points.

Apart from the Ground Control kit, I've found nothing bigger than OEM for the Z4M. Does anyone know if the H&R ARB kit for the E46 M3 (30mm front and 25mm rear) will fit the Z4M?

Bee,

Do you know what the necessary mod is?

I'll find out.... I talked to Simpson about this before using the csl parts.... I'll give them a call as I need to speak to Anthony anyway...

If in not mistaken the wholes need to be enlarged.

If it's just making bigger holes for the drop links, that should be an easy fix: I'm intending fitting aftermarket drop-links so can get bolts to fit.

Have you fitted an OEM CSL 30.8mm bar?

Definitely. The clue is in their name  They couple the action of the dampers on each axle, so that when you go around a corner, instead of load transfer to the outer wheel causing bodyroll, the load transfer to the outer damper couples the loading to the inner damper too, so that the bodyroll is resisted. With a decent sized ARB, this helps to keep the car more parallel to the road surface (flatter), so that the loading on the wheels on the same axle is more evenly distributed so that the tyre contact patch of both wheels are resisting lateral forces, which increases lateral grip: i.e you can corner faster :D

The further advantage is that by reducing bodyroll, the dynamic geometry settings are more likely to remain closer to their static settings, which gives much more predictable and precise handling and with specific geometry changes you can make the car handle precisely as you want it to.

This is my Z3MC with highly modified suspension and uprated ARBs cornering. There is no significant bodyroll.

As per my experience H&R ARB kit for the E46 M3 will fit for Z4M. You go for upgrading. Good luck.

In the interim, I've fitted the H&R ARBs. I installed the front ARB first which certainly improved the front end and steering. I installed the rear ARB a few weeks later, which gave the rear end more "push" and I had to reset the dampers all round to account for the change and to get the handling nicely balanced. I've now got the ride and handling exactly as I like it. :D

Hi Exdos,

I too am considering fitting the H&R M3 ARB 30mm front and 25mm rear and would just like your opinion first of the overall improvement in handling. I find the stock bars very good against body roll and only really feel the car roll a bit excessively when hitting long corners at fast speeds and the rear tyres just start to lose traction (I'm talking about 80-90mph). I'm not convinced though that the slight degree of body roll is causing the loss of traction but I may well be wrong. So I was just wondering if the uprated ARB has made any real difference for fast road driving? I understand that it would make sense to upgrade if I was tracking the car and pushing it to ts limits all the time as I will be needing the extra stability, but what is your opinion of the upgrade for fast road driving? Has the upgrade provided you with a noticeable extra stability even at lower speeds?

Thanks

Al

Al,

Although I think that the Z4MC's OEM suspension is dreadful, it's pretty good at resisting lateral bodyroll, which it achieves via a stiff front ARB and and very stiff rear springs/dampers. I think changing the ARBs on their own won't actually achieve much because lateral bodyroll isn't really the problem, so I doubt that fitting H&R ARBs would be worthwhile on its own.

I replaced the OEM suspension with AC Schnitzer racing suspension within 2 months of buying my Z4MC and this transformed the handling and the ride, and for me, this was absolutely essential. Fiting uprated ARBs in conjunction with uprated suspension has allowed me to get the the handling and ride exactly as I like it: the ride is also now very comfortable with excellent neutral handling.

Hope this helps.

Resurrecting this thread....! :D

Just to clarify - Exdos, which H&R anti roll bars do you have fitted to your car? The Z4M ones or the E46 M3 ones?

I know diameter is all important (!) but a better quality material for the bar itself can aid it's torsional stiffness.

Given the issues with front anti roll bar mounting points, what's the best compromise? I'm running Bilstein PSS10s on my car...

Cheers!

I got the E46 M3 ones as found here: http://www.modbargains.com/_e/E46_1...M3_PR/H_R_Sway_Bars_Anti_Roll_Bars_E46_M3.htm

I actually bought mine from Evolve, but at the moment ,with the £1 being around $1:49 it might be cheaper to buy them from the USA?

I've put shims between the front ARB mounting points and the brackets as I've described in the 7th posting down here: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=38918&p=565636&hilit=shim#p565636 I've done around 4 full track days at The Ring with them and there's no problem to the chassis.

Many thanks Exdos!

Are you just running the E46 M Front Anti Roll bar and the standard Z4M Rear? Any reasoning behind that?? I'm assuming the Z4 rear item is beefy enough already?

I run both E46 M3 H&R ARBs front and rear. I fitted the front one first and test drove it before fitting the rear ARB and the handling balance wasn't right until the rear ARB was also uprated.

I run both front and rear H&R ARBs too (on Exdos's recommendation) with KW Clubsport suspension. The handling is sublime, especially on semislick tyres. The only downside I've encountered is that on full lock the front ARB fouls the brake calliper. This is only an issue when manoeuvring.
