Grrr... Road tax

I've just got around to my long list of things to do, one of which is to tax the Z. Picked up the reminder, thumped in the details and they're wanting £30 more. Turns out I made a boo-boo in that the tax ran out at the end of March; in my head it's April as I bought the car pretty well a year ago today.

So I'm tripply annoyed: I coughed up for most of an unnecessary month last year; I've been stung by the rate going up way more than they usually do on the lower bands and its cost me £30 more than if I'd sat down to do it a month ago.

Bloody awful system with its stupidly fine granularity between bands while having exponential cost steps against them. The Z is 202g/km - that 2g is £30 a year extra. My 320d, being a Touring, is a band up from the saloon with the same engine and that's always p'd me off - £40 more this year. Mind you, this year there seems to be yet another over-complicated structure coming in and the difference between 150g/km and 151g/km is... wait for it.... £390. Lower is £255 and then it jumps to £645. Eeek.

No worries, if the optimists have got it right the and the ///M Values are rising at astronomical rates it should more than cover the cost.

Luckily I taxed my MC on 1 February so it "only" cost me £630.

Allow me to help you all feel just a little bit better....

Your yearly Z4M motor tax cost, would get you the equivalent of 3 months cover in Ireland (with change left over to buy some lube) - €678 per quarter, or €2400 to tax for a whole year.

My Z4C is no picnic either - 3 months is €353, yearly is €1250.

And don't get me started on insurance costs, or the lack of multi-car policies..... :headbang:

Got a 2017 Mazda 2L petrol. Costs £30 a year. Only because of when it was registered. Good old UK Gov!
Had a 2018 BMW 440, cost £565 a year. One year newer and about 10% more CO2.

You're not missing anything there, they are a rip off here. "we charge you more but you think you're saving and it's more convenient".

I remember being in Ireland about 30 years ago. We were talking to the Hotel owner about 'stuff'. He said something I will never forget "this must be the only Country in the world where it doesn't pay to earn a living". He was talking about the huge rate of VAT at the time IIRC.

Perhaps why I replaced my Mazda2, 6 days after the old one died and have been doing 1500 miles a month, in it. Just fun miles :driving: But am still hesitating over replacing my beloved ///MR. So probably pumping more CO2 into the air, than if I were, running both and doing far less fun miles. Which was the case, after I retired, but before the ///MR died.

So to sum up. More CO2 imisions= less tax.

You’re only ever a year behind though so not really saving, will be £695 next year.

One good bit of news on road tax - Electric vehicles are now liable for full road tax after April 2025.

With the cost of EV's, the majority will also be liable for the higher rate. Wonder what that good news will do for sales?
