GROM or similar for E86 w/ satnav screen

Hi,

Been a couple weeks since Ive had my Z4. So far, so good. But I cant live with shitty FM radio while Im stuck in traffic (Hate the blah blah and adverts)... the sound of an idle straight six also just doesnt cut it.

I have the SatNav system installed on my Z, no CD interchanger in the back. Just a single CD drive on the headunit, plus the aux in and phone bluetooth. Standard speaker setup I believe.

It would be great to retain track info on the screen and steering wheel controls. It seems to me the GROM is the way to go. I can simply stick my music collection on a small external SSD in the back.

I like this option because there are no wires to worry about dangling around if I use the AUX cable input, keeping the car clean.

Anyone with experience trying to get a more modernized system in place who has the much dated SatNav screen system? Other options besides the GROM welcome.

Cheers

Hi James,

Looks like we have the same SatNav setup, but my car had the Intravee device installed - which allowed a phone/ipod to plug in via the central console.
It wasn't an ideal setup for me so I looked into a blue music bluetooth device which can be picked up from amazon pretty cheaply.

Using the really helpful instructions here: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=125967 I simply unplugged the Intravee from the 6 cd changer preparation (my car had the cables but not the changer) and plugged in the BT dongle.

Then it was simply a matter of pairing my phone, and I can now easily play anything from my phone in the car (digital radio/apple music/spotify etc.) without any plugging in or faffing about.

The screen doesn't display the track listing (which it did when using the Intravee), but I have my phone on a magnetic cradle that has all that stuff visible anyway. Tracks and volume can still be adjusted using steering wheel controls.
