Grinding window

Looks like it's time to get my wallet out again :( My drivers side electric window is grinding intermittently when winding it back up. It's so bad sometimes that it stops altogether for a moment. Is this just going to be the case of a new motor or mechanism? Is it going to be costly?
 
Yes, it'll be one or the other. The precise nature of the sound may give someone a clue as to which it is. Probably best to remove the door card etc. and investigate directly. Each part alone should be around 100 quid.
 
I'd avoid using the window, on my old Z4 it soon failed completely once the grinding started. Window regulator and two goes at getting the glass adjusted at the dealer to stop the draughts!

As others have said its probably the regulator it's an easy enough DIY job just a bit tricky getting the alignment of window correct it can take a bit of adjusting.
 
Hmm, sounds likely to be the regulator then. Just not using my window at the moment but I guess I'm going to have to get it sorted sooner or later. Cheers guys.
 
You should be able to use the existing motor its usually the cable on the regulator that breaks. Just swap the motor over onto the new regulator. Someone may correct me if I am wrong on this. Shame it's not the passenger motor I think I have a spare in the garage you could of had.

From all the symptoms, I'm pretty sure it's just the regulator though. The motor sounds like it's working ok, just the movement of the window is intermittent and the loud scraping / grinding noise seems likely to be the regulator.

I think I'm safe to get one ordered and be confident that it will sort my problem. Eurocarparts have a sale on currently that will allow me to purchase one for about £100 so I'll get one ordered.
 
Well, the window is getting worse :( It grinds to a halt before reaching the top now.

Luckily I have my car parked under a car port so no water will be getting in.

I've bought a new regulator for £102 and have the car booked in to have it fitted on Monday for a quoted £70.

Fingers crossed it sorts it out.
 
Well, got it sorted today, total cost £150 and window now works great :)

One small problem, they did a rubbish job of putting the seal and door card back on :headbang:

How difficult would this be to sort out myself? Not sure if I trust them to do it right :?
 
It's easy to remove the card if you do the research so you know where all the hidden fasteners are. There's a video or two about this procedure somewhere on the 'net. The top clips tend to be really tight, so tight you'll fear breaking something. Hopefully a bit looser since they've just been off recently.

I wouldn't trust anyone to reseal the door properly either.
 
Ok, they've had a second go and it's still crap :headbang:

You can get your finger behind the seal the fit is so poor! Reckon they must have broken the clips or something? I won't be taking the car there again!
 
Ok, so the plot thickens further.....

I've just bought a T25 torx screwdriver and had the door card off to see what these clowns have done inside my door only to be greeted by the sight of no vapour barrier / membrane :headbang: They've just ripped it all off to get to the regulator and not replaced it :evil: So my car is going to leak like mad next time it rains!

No idea how the guy managed to make such a pigs ear of refitting the door card though as it really is an absolute doddle! The seal has been disfigured where the guy has prised the card off though! Utterly gash job all round! Fuming :evil:
 
That's inexcusable! Gutted for you. They owe it to you to make it right, but dare you leave your car with them again? I'd be inclined to just fix it myself and be sure to make it known to everyone I could what hacks they are.
 
I think you're right, I'll fix it myself.

I just find it hard to believe any so called mechanic could make such a bad job of something so simple :x

Phoned the guy who runs the place today and he was apologetic and said to bring it in but I really don't want them near my car now!
