Great Sporting Moments

I can still remember the excitement of the Long Jump Competition at the 3rd World Athletic Championships in Tokyo 1991

The competition between Carl Lewis and Mike Powell was unbelievably tense and dramatic as each tried to out jump the other.

I would rate that as a truely great sporting moment

In 1980 when Team USA Hockey Defeats The Soviet Union that will always be the greatest moment in sports history for me.

"Rag tag bunch of mostly teenaged amateurs, barely together a few months and playing a sport invented and perfected elsewhere, take on the most polished, professional and unbeatable team in the history of international hockey and win. Producing the greatest upset in the pantheon of sport in a time of international political tension smack dab in the middle of a Cold War that defined the parameters of the century. What makes the ultimate upset even more unbelievable is the fact that the same two teams played only a week earlier in an exhibition match and the Soviet Union cruised to a 10-1 victory, setting the stage for the expected American embarrassment that never came. Oh, yeah, and the US went on to defeat Finland for the gold in one of the most anticlimactic championship rounds in Olympic history."

When the water polo team came to the rescue of the cross country team because the football team decided they needed to beat on the runners.

bunch of effin homos jumped us in the showers. Water polo guys waded in and there was a bit of football player stomping done.

Ah yes, the so called "Miracle on Ice." I suppose if you are an American that would be your hockey "moment" but for us in the Great White North it would be the 1972 Summit series. I recall very well being pulled out of classes with the rest of our school (and virtually every other school in the country) to watch that series. Seeing Canada defeat Russia easily trumped whatever schooling was planned for the day. :D

Hockey is not just a sport here - more of a religion.

Very hard to pick just one from the large world of sports....

As noted above the 72 Summit series would be one of my top picks, but also 2002 Olympics where Canada won both hockey gold medals by defeating both the men's and women's US teams would be a big contender as top spot.

In pro sports maybe the Toronto Blue Jays first world series win? Not that I follow baseball since the last strike.

For me personally it's a tough call - probably being on a team that beat the US in international competition - we were huge underdogs and and beat the US team quite soundly.......
