I'm sure someone can answer this one quickly.

If you no longer have BMW assist does this mean that google local search stops and thus traffic information for the sat nav is also stopped.

BMW assist is part of ConnectedDrive/Telematics. When your subscription to this expires (after 3 years unless extended) you lose all functions that require an internet connection on the car - including Google.

Thanks for that.
Thought that might be the case, even if it is a bit of a con losing some of the idrive functionality unless you fork out more cash.

How is it a con to have to pay for support services? You (or the original owner) paid for 3 years services within the price of the car.

That's like getting annoyed about your phone being cut off when you stop paying.

At some point a connected drive store is supposed to become available so you can pick and chose what you would like to keep. But yes the majority of the services are 3 years only, E-call and telematics are for the lifetime of the vehicle, although after 3 years recovery etc will be chargeable to the customer.

Well I don't really see it as a support services when iDrive was one of the big selling points at the time, and all the it entailed. It's like having a sky+ box that stops letting you record things unless you pay more money.

Im pretty sure when you read the details it says its only for 3 years and if the small print of your Sky+ box said that i cant see how thats unfair

I think you're confusing what idrive is. It's a central control system but it has so many services, some of which cost money to run as they're not part of the inbuilt software. Part of it is concierge services which include google send to car and portal etc you surely don't expect this to be free forever do you? Free unending sim car and comms costs not to mention the concierge and other services? It's certainly something that was explained to me at time of purchase. As for lifetime eCall I'd check that because I'm not sure that's the case?

my 3 series with i drive is coming up to 3 yrs
does anyone know what sort cost it is likely to be to keep the same service?

My car is well over 3 yrs and the services etc still work. I have not paid. (Oh yes :D ).

I would call that a result - or maybe a mistake. Either way your ahead on the deal!

My car was 18 months old when I bought it and the original owner hadn't registered into the system - The system should expire or ask for cash at 4.5 years!
