Go Pro Hero 4

Has anyone fitted one of these inside their E89 Z4 ?

I want a dash cam but not hard wired so wondered about one of these and just clip/unclip from a mount somewhere ... windscreen or behind and between driver/passenger seats on the centre plastic trim / cubby or mounted somehow to it ?

I have a go pro hero 3 (black). I use it when I'm on classic car runs and they can be a bit slow and tedious at times so I want to be able to switch record on and off during the whole day. The battery will not do this. constant record is good for about 40 minutes and mix of record/standby about an hour. so mine is wired and charging all the time, bit of a faff with wires (go pro, iPhone monitor and tomtom satnav all working at the same time) but works very well

I looked into using one as a Dash Cam but came to the conclusion, its too large and clunky and not discrete enough to leave in the car permanently so went with a dedicated cam which is tiny and hardly noticeable in the car.

I think for the occasional in car use and for action shots its fine but I think depends what you are going to use it for.

I think I am going off the idea now due to the size of the unit by the time the casing is added and a mount. I want a dash cam but do not want to fit one to the Z4 as I am unsure currently if it will stay or get swapped for a new M135i .... my desire for top down is fighting against a chuckable hot hatch ... though the Z4 is winning in my head as I've only had this one 7 months.

Having gone from the Z4 to the M135i last year engine aside as I had the 2.0 in the Zed there is just no comparison for me personally, the 1er is a much nicer drive especially with the adaptive suspension etc, the only but though is I really do miss the Z4s looks as the 1er for me is just a box on wheels, it all changes when behind the wheel but when you park up get out and look at it there is no wow factor going on  I may change next year but unsure what too, maybe for another M135i with more spec on it and keep it indefinitely as the current LCI model will be the last of its kind as in 2018 the replacement will be front wheel drive with no room for the 6cyl :( The other fly in the ointment is a friend has just picked up a new Golf R and having seen it, it looks an impressive motor and the 4 wheel drive appeals, just no 6 Cyl :(

If you went for the 1er, you could always get a 3.0 Z3 for some weekend top down fun etc, cheap to buy and they're great cars to tinker with :)

This is exactly my car position at the moment. A great compromise :D

I'd thoroughly recommend the M135i: it's discrete, goes like the wind, handles superbly and makes a great noise. Took mine to the ring last year and got a chance to see what out could really do  Awesome little car.

I was having a chat with two guys with an M135i and a Golf R at a track day yesterday. They were driving each other's cars and running them simultaneously. They found the BMW was much faster in a straight line but the VW was quicker through the corners. The brakes let down the BMW though, overheating in just a few laps (perhaps due to driving style - both were novices, having never driven on a track before). Gedo's right, the M135i sounds great at full chat.

Two interesting insights here -
A friend who lives in Germany said he bought at M135i over a Golf R purely for its confidence to scrub off speed at >200km/h with stone cold brakes. Apparently the Golf felt very weak on occasional 70-100mph speed drops. Conversely on back roads when he was repeatedly pulling the car down from lower speeds the Golf brakes felt much better than the BMWs. With this is mind the Golf's brakes should be better on track.

From a driving school 328i sDrive v's xDrive - Novices almost always start off faster in the xDrive, but they always end up faster in the sDrive. So how much is driver & how much is car?

Z4 stays ... M135i will have to wait .... and looking at a MiVue as saw the quality today of a recorded incident and well taken by it. May get it hard wired. Superb quality and so small.

I have a SJCAM 4000 WiFi - which is a GoPro copy really but only costs £60. Really happy with it.
Might be worth a look as a much cheaper alternative to a gopro
