I've recently sold my Z4 but kept back my genuine BMW y-cable for use with iphone 4/4S (or any ipod with the 30 pin connector). It's the lead which plugs into both the usb port and the audio port in the centre console and allows you to play your music through the BMW stereo and use the steering wheel controls to change tracks etc. It also charges your phone/ipod at the same time.
I used it with my Iphone 5S with a suitable lightening adapter from Apple.
Anyway, I don't need it anymore so if someone would like to buy it, please PM me for details. Cost £49.99 from BMW new.
