Gearbox Help

So i get a call from the wife today saying someone ran her into the curb, no real damage, no impact marks on the wheel, but she said it was a loud bang. Moments later after she arrived at work the car will not go into gear, or so it would seem.

On closer inspection the gearstick has lost all its spring so doesn't self center and seems to not go in gear. I put the car in what should be first and the car will go to pull away, however if i put it in reverse it also goes to pull away...forwards?!?!?!

Im wondering if the gear linkage may be bust from the impact, so the car is stuck in whichever gear it was in which is why it will try to pull away forwards whilst in reverse. Anyone else got any ideas?

Really hoping its not the gearbox itself that's bust as it would probably write the car off (Pug 307). Guess a good way to tell will be to leave it in what should be neutral and see if its the same.

So its basically stuck in first gear if I've got it right? Does sound like the gear linkage is knackered after the impact

It's wierd as it needs to go into gear, any will do for it to move. Got a mechanic coming to take a look so will wait and see what he says. It's an odd one though for sure.

Broken / loose linkage from the impact. Had similar on an Astra hire car. Discovered it was only a plastic link with ball cup on each end and a pot hole was enough to disengage it.

Yep seems about right, apparently a gear cable has broken...Didn't even know they used cables but they don't think anything to sinister has happened.

I'd wager the driver was holding the gear lever and forced it while inadvertently using it to brace on or similar during what was likely a small impact. Lever pushed one way while gearbox jolted the other.

Id wager that there wasnt even another car which forced her into the curb, she probably just wasn't paying attention
