G3 and G10

Can someone explain the difference between farcla G3 and G10. both of these are the professional ones in the yellow bottle not the black one.

i thought g3 was a harsher cutting compound good for 1500grit level scratches and g10 was a fnishing compound for lighter marks. so you would use the g3 and finish with the g10

i used g3 to get rid of the bird poo marks. which it did with ease thankfully. i put it on using a damp cloth and as i worked it the paste seemed to break down, the grittyness of it faded and i wiped off what looked like a milky liquid.

the finish was really good but i thought maybe there is stuff there that i cant see so i went over the area with g10. the g10 made it worse and left what can only be described as a dull surface. i thought oh s**t and use the g3 again to bring the shine up.

I have seen this new G3/G10 stuff as Halfords have just started stocking it. I've had this squeez bottle of G3 compound for a few years which I use for deep scratches and marks, but not sure if its the same stuff as Halfords are stocking.

I normally use G3 and then finish off with Meguires Scratch X.

im on about the stuff in a yellow bottle used by detailers rather than the halfords stuff.

i think i juts got a hookey bottle of g10 which ive found out is a finishing paste. very little cutting and mostly used for a high gloss finish.

I am a car painter, and use G3 and G10 all the time, they are not really intedned to be used by hand, but with a machine polisher.
The G3 is quite a coarse cutting compound, designed to remove scratches from paintwork, or sanding dullness left from 1500/2000 grit flatting papers.
As G3 is quite a coarse compound, the G3 itself will actually leave swirling marks in the paint, particularly noticable on darker coloured cars, and these marks are then removed by cutting the entire area again, but this time with the G10.. a much finer grade compound than G3.
After that, the car must be polished, as neither the G3, or G10 are a polish, and so will leave the paintwork unprotected.

If you found the G10, to leave more marks than the G3.. there is something wrong there. Are you using a coarse rag to apply it? If so, try using a microfibre one for the G10, but always, for both the G3, or G10, make sure your rags are damp.. it'll spread it much better, and also help keep the dust down.

Hope that helps, and if you need any more info, just ask.

Thanks, Russ

Great.... looks like i need to buy a bottle of G10 to compliment the G3 I have

Thanks for the info

I have fast hands

But in all seriousness I've not had any issues using G3 by hand and going back over with Meguires Scatch X to bring back a swirl free shine. I use a wet blue roll up cloth to apply it. I'm also only doing little bits like scratches and chips, there's no way I'd attempt a panel by hand.

The last time I used it was for a stone ship, I built the chip up, flatted it smooth with some crocus paper, polished it with G3 and finished off with Scratch X.

Its then protected after with Autoglym SRP and wax.

hi there russ, i was trying the g3 as a last ditch attemt to get the bird poo marks out which i have to say it did a treat with little effort. i was using a damp microfibre cloth for both compounds.

i really think it was a dodgy bottle of g10 or something was wrong with it as the g3 got it up a treat. they were only small marks so by hand wasnt too much of a problem.

the whole car got a coat of black hole, exp sealant and then natty blue after that so all nice and protected but thanks for the heads up.
