G29 in Winter

The only all seasons I found in required size for rear (275/35/19) are Vredstein Quatrac and they don't even have good reviews. So I gave up on initial idea of buying all seasons and bought winter tyres from Ebay. Rears were more difficult to find, but got pair coming from Z4 and just bought fronts and will collect them next week. Car is arriving in 2 weeks and I plan to stick winter tyres on it straight away, to go to Europe for couple of weeks. I hate tyres swapping every season, especially since you can't use Z4 to haul tyres to the garage for a swap, so it will be extra hassle. That's why I wanted all seasons.

I used SLK in real winter conditions and without winter tyres it was useless in minimal amount of snow, so I expect something similar from Z4.

That’s the main issue with keeping your existing alloys and swapping/storing tyres.
 
My friend stores winter tyres with BMW Milton K., he said it's only £25 per year, so maybe Croydon one offers something similar. This way, I could minimise trips with tyres to the garage. Have to check with them.
 
I put winter tyres on today. I was pleasantly surprised, that 3 tyres fitted into the car, so only had to carry one separately. Went on a quick drive, to make sure all is ok. Car didn't recognise tyres, so had to choose manualy and "Other" size. 19 inch wheels were not listed under winter/all seasons.

I think that winter tyres are quieter than OEM summer ones.

I'm going to Europe on weekend, don't know for how long. It already snowed in the Alps. I watch web cams on Stevio. And in past, I encountered snow twice on higher mountain passes in Switzerland, on August Bank Holiday.
 
why is it impossible to find cross climate tyres for the M40i front and rear? silly question but do the rears have to be 275/35R19? or could i fit 255/35R19 tyres to the rear? Are the rear alloy wheels larger than the fronts? I really wanted Michelin Cross Climate 2.
 
That's a good question about size of alloys and whether they are different. Brochure doesn't mention exact size. I would expect the rear alloys to be a bit wider.

On previous car with identical wheels (AWD), I put 285/30/21 winter tyres to replace 275/35/21, simply because I couldn't find decently priced original size. There was -3% error in speed measurement. There are websites where you can compare sizes and error in speed display.

On Mercedes which has staggered wheels, I put winter tyres narrower by 10, both on front and rear. And I used this car in Germany, so it experienced actual winter.
 
I find the decision of when to swap to winters is always a bit of a guessing game. I've both left it too late and got snowed in, and swapped them too early before a mini heatwave :lol:

I have another set of wheels with Michelin Pilot Alpin 6's on. For the 1 series mind, the Z is asleep in the garage by then :thumbsup:

At the top of page two, I posted the BMW recommended size of winter tyre (M+S) they are listed as 255/40 R18’s front and rear, so you could easily go 255/35 R19 :thumbsup:
