I've been running a S54 motor since 2003 and I used to use only Shell Optimax (V-Power) 98RON when this fuel first became available, but because of the scarcity of Shell filling stations in my district and the small tank/short range, I became obsessed with constantly filling up whenever I passed a Shell garage. It got ridiculous and it began to spoil my enjoyment of hooning in remote places. I decided to expand my choice and eventually, once, I could only refill with 95RON fuel. I was expecting some sort of difficulty on the lower fuel, but I didn't experience any negatives at all. I've since been happy to put 95RON in both my Z3MC and Z4MC and if I drive by a Tescos, I'll fill up with 99RON. I've not had any problem with the ECUs adapting to different fuels but I'm careful to ensure that I never run down to the dregs in the tank, which I think is a possible reason why many report problems after filling up with different fuel. From datalogging, I don't notice any significant differences from different fuels.
 
Well, filled up this evening with 'V-Power Super Nitro Plus Extra' and as I was I was presented for a 10p/litre voucher.

Now for my expenses I have to put in £55 of fuel - otherwise I waste anything extra on the receipt as I can't claim it back - so thought I'd put £60 in instead so that I had a receipt for £60-£4.50 (45 litres x10p).

Got to the till and the till jockey pointed out the voucher wasn't valid until 3rd May :headbang:

Ah well, it's only £5 that I can't claim back - and I'll get that back when I use the voucher next week :thumbsup:
 
From what I recall from my engine development days, BMW did a really fantastic job of mapping the S54 engine for different fuels - a lot of other OEMs don't.. The extra octane might give you a hp or so, but its other things like the heating value of the fuel that really count - better octane fuels normally mean better quality components. Things like throttle response and transient torque response should also improve with 98 compared to 95RON.

Any decent quality super grade should be a good investment - super grade fuels normally have more detergents in as well to help with injector deposits and also with fouling O2 sensors as well.

Before you ask - I do work in the oil industry for one of the majors, but I am not going to tell you which one!! :D
 
I recently did 1200 miles in mine and had to use any fuel I could get my hands on, I drove right up the west coast of Scotland past Ullapool and most of the petrol stations were 2 pump affairs, one for petrol and one for diesel.

I'd only ever ran the M on BP ultimate and after reading all the comments on 97 RON + was expecting bad things. It didn't make any difference whatsoever, no noticeable drop in performance, nothing. This was with all manner of high revving shenanigans, village driving etc.

I now don't bother, the only performance gain now is my wallet runs fuller for longer. Don't bother, unless someone shows you the science it's just Internet wisdom and marketing bollocks.
 
I use Esso supreme 97 ron. Runs sweet, cheap Esso station close and my brother makes it and swears by it :D
