Smelling petrol is normal, so that's not something to worry about.
I think best bet is to take the car in to someone who knows what they're doing. You've clearly got something wrong, and while it sounds like VANOS to me it could also be a dirty filter, failed gasket etc.
If it is VANOS, a BMW dealer will usually cost a fortune. A VANOS specialist can often repair the problem for a substantially reduced price.
