Fuel consumption: city use

My Z4M best is 29 mpg drops to 26 around town.

If it remains a s bad as you say, it could possibly something as simple as a lamda sensor (O2 sensor) ..... injection systems switch to default mode which is rich when the sensors fail, however, I'd expect to get an emissions failure on the dashboard should this be the case.

Im the same, although I get about 31 but seen 34 ;)

28 is about average.

I was getting 34-35Mpg in my 2007 Z4 2.0. Out of work runs, about 2/3rd of which was motorway and 1/3 normal town roads.

Now in the sdrive 20i, with supposedly better fuel economy and lower emissions, im down to 30-31mpg.

Cant explain that.

City driving isn't as clear cut as people suggest, what you should be including is your average speed, the lower the average speed, the worse the mpg generally. Mines a 04 2.5 manual and the very worst Ive had is 16 mpg (booting it a lot, when I 1st got it) and my average speed was about 10 mph, yet I have a week where I drive on a few longer roads (still city roads) and I average 22mpg at 14ish mph. I've been paying attention to it a lot and its suprising how much mpg can vary even when we are talking strictly urban.
