Frozen paint or Gloss finish? which would you choose.

Hi guys,

my car is due to be completely PPF Protected early spring before this season starts. Ive got a choice.... do i keep it glossy or do i go for the frozen look and do a stealth install? im leaning towards gloss as i THINK the frozen look may get old rather quickly but would love peoples opinions.

With the parts for these not being the cheapest and getting harder to come across i decided its time to pull my finger out and do my much promised video serious on my z4 and get it properly protected. i can also use it for marketing purposes for work which is another bonus.

Cant wait to get this done, get the car properly serviced and enjoy the hell out of it this year.

Ooh frozen grey Z4M, that would be nice to see, at least you won’t have to worry so much about touch ups etcetera in your line of work

My vote goes to gloss. Call me old fashioned but when the car is dirty and I give it a good clean, stand back and look at it, wow! That feeling of a good job done is great. Do you get that with frozen, I don’t know as my cars have always been gloss.

i tend to agree with this ... and PPF gives an incredible waxed gloss. Frozen finishes do look extremely cool BUT.... once this stuff is on, its not something you want to keep changing as its insanely expensive to do a full coverage PPF install.

Gloss for me.
I too have a feeling that the fad for frozen finishes will disappear but shiny cars will never go out of fashion.

Ditto..I think the E85 is a classy car ageing well..the frozen look I think will date and looks out of place, IMHO with an iconic car!

I was thinking about wraps a little while back and thought frozen silver would look amazing on an E85/6. Perfect car for it really thanks to the surfacing.

As long as the ppf maintains a certain amount of ‘sheen’ (satin rather than an overly flat matte finish) then I think it would be great. Hard to say if you’d grow tired of it though

It's a satin finish like say the frozen BMW finishes..... It could look absolutely incredible....
But I agree with many their is something about a shiny , wet looking glossy car. But the frozen look / finishes are so freaking cool.

This is going to be a very difficult install to get right. I am tempted to go frozen . more than likely I'll play it safe and go gloss.

One side frozen and the other gloss :)

I would go for Gloss.. 8)

I've seen a few ///M4s and AMGs in frozen grey and hated the look of each and every one.

Plus think of trying to get bird poo off.

Another vote for gloss. Frozen grey would look epic, but from a maintenance perspective any matte finish is hell: you can’t polish out scratches as it adds gloss and changes texture, it’s extremely difficult to do a spot repair, and cleaning it properly is challenging due to dirt getting stuck in the pores of a matte finish.

Shiny side up for me

Looks like a poor amateur attempt at a spray job. Really don’t like it.

I really don't like frozen finishes although they seem popular on recent models, but on any E85/6 it would just look wrong to me.

Although I can understand the appeal of a mobile advert for the business in Beedub's case.

With gloss you already know what it will look like so if I were you I’d try a matte panel and live with it for a few days. Preferably one that takes different light so any of the side panels imo.

It’s definitely more of a gamble, but I always liked the E92 in frozen silver so it should work well on the more dramatic Z4.

[ref]beanie[/ref], matte does suit the flame surfaces of the E85/6 particularly well. I remember seeing these pics a few years back and I have to admit: still quite like them

im mid way through a satin grey vinyl wrap on a new hybrid range rover and ..... it looks immense, so so good, but gloss for me definitely.. pics of the car are here at the bottom of the page. Remember ill be using PPF on the z4 which is a very different price point and of course primary function is protection of the paintwork.
